PRESCOTT — After a disappointing loss to rival Flagstaff earlier this week, the Prescott boys’ tennis team has won two straight including a 9-0 sweep over visiting Mingus Union on Thursday afternoon to stay perfect in Section V play.

No. 1 singles player Brandon Nguyen beat Logan Connella, 6-4, 6-2, Jack Darr needed a tiebreaker round to defeat Jerry Hernandez, 4-6, 6-3 (10-6) and the Badgers earned their third sweep of the season.

“I started off a little shaky in the first set,” Nguyen said about his singles match with Connella. “I had to dial down my serve a bit and stay patient. The key was to stay longer in the point, staying consistent and wearing my opponent down.”

Nguyen said he spotted a flaw in Connella’s game, which helped him earn the win.

“He preferred to hit his forehand a lot, so I kept it low and forced him to use his backhand and a weaker shot,” Nguyen said, adding that Mingus is usually a tough team to play.

“Mingus always poses a big threat. We usually go one and one a lot with them in a season,” Nguyen said. “Recently we had a tough loss against Flagstaff, but we’re barreling through it and keeping our moral up.”

As for Darr’s marathon victory over Hernandez, the No. 2 singles player said he didn’t play very strong to start.

“I adjusted to how he was hitting and started to pull the match out,” Darr said. “The tiebreaker was a lot closer than I thought it needed to be, but I managed to pull it out. … I felt like as long as I could get a rally going and not miss, eventually he would have a misstep somewhere, and I took advantage of that.”

In No. 3 singles play, Brandon Klever won, 6-3, 6-1, Luke Hardy won the No. 4 singles match, 6-2, 6-1, and Julio Ortega won the No. 5 singles match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 6, Jack Clark defeated Brigham Peterson, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Nguyen and Klever won 8-5, Darr and Orega paired to win 8-0 and Hardy teamed up with Colton Carter to win 8-0.
