Celebrate the history of the area's ranching community while honoring the original opening of the Phippen Museum on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the museum's annual Fall Gathering. Now in its 10th year, the gathering will once again see inductions into the Arizona Rancher and Cowboy Hall of Fame as well as entertainment by The Rusty Pistols and Ranch Style BBQ by Big Daddy E's.
Museum Marketing & Communications Director Edd Kellerman said the Fall Gathering commemorates the grand opening of the museum in 1984 and celebrates the ranching community's history.
"When we did our first Fall Gathering, we would have a lot of the ranchers come and they would bring their cattle brands," he said, adding they burned their ranches' brands on the beams formerly in front of the museum.
According to Kellerman, the museum trademarked the Arizona Rancher and Cowboy Hall of Fame and inducts influential and inspirational cowboys and ranchers. One of the inductees, Kellerman said, is J. C. Trujillo. This year John Seibert and Zeke Taylor will be inducted.
Also, Kellerman said, every year a raffle raises money for the museum and this year's prize drawing is for a bronze of a horse, called "Romp," by Cynthia Rigden. Raffle tickets are $5.
While most of the Phippen's events are downstairs, Kellerman said the tables come upstairs for the Gathering.
"People are actually sitting out among the exhibits," he said. "We put everybody up with all the artwork."
Noting that the Gathering is part of the western heritage aspect of the museum, Kellerman said it also brings the ranching community together for a great, country casual time. He said folks will come in their boots, jeans and cowboy hats and see people they haven't seen since last year.
Admission to the Fall Gathering is $25 in advance and seating is limited.
