PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - Each of the No. 1 seeds for Prescott High and Bradshaw Mountain's wrestling teams advanced to the winners' bracket semifinals to begin the AIA Division 2 state tournament Friday, Feb. 13, at Prescott Valley Event Center.All three of those wrestlers will grapple Saturday, Feb. 14, at the meet, which kicks off with the second session at 10 a.m. and the medal rounds at 4 p.m.Prescott's Talon Vaughan at 160 pounds improved his record to 44-1 by defeating Desert Edge's Adam Gallegos, 13-4, in the first round and Maricopa's Will Swapshire, 14-9, in the winners' bracket quarterfinals.Related: State Wrestling Day 1: Camp Verde, back-to-back D-4 champs, sends 5 to finalsVaughan will take on Deer Valley No. 4 seed Javier Pro (45-4), who pinned both of his first two opponents Friday, in the semis.Defending 195-pound state champion Daniel Hernandez won his first two matches by pin. In his opener, Hernandez dropped Marana Mountain View's Louis Aguilar in 1 minute and 4 seconds. He followed up that victory by felling Washington's Talan Kramer in 3:20.Hernandez (46-1) will battle Cienega's Andrew Vera (49-5) in the semis.Joining Vaughan and Hernandez will be Bradshaw Mountain 285-pounder John Trout, another top seed. Trout, who now owns a 47-5 record, edged Sunnyslope's Shaun Lister, 3-2, in the first round. He then shut out Poston Butte's Ben Crossley, 3-0, in the winners' bracket quarters.On Saturday, Trout has a showdown with Cactus Shadows' Tyler Collins (52-10), who won by pin and by decision in his first two matches, respectively, Friday.In other results for Prescott and Bradshaw Mountain in the opening rounds on Friday: Badgers' 113-pounder Darian Bowyer was pinned in 4:24 in his first-round match against Desert Edge's Shawn Trujillo and dropped into the consolation bracket. Marana Mountain View's Andrew Cota subsequently eliminated Bowyer, 15-3. Bowyer, a freshman, finished his season with a 29-19 record. Badgers' 126-pounder Braden Grauberger narrowly lost his opening-round match, 5-3, to Cienega's Tyler Francisco and dropped into the consolation bracket. Grauberger stayed alive with a 14-4 win over Marcos de Niza's Carnell Dargan. He'll wrestle again today in hopes of qualifying for the medal round. Badgers' 138-pounder Saxon Vaughan lost his first-round match, 7-1, to Poston Butte's Shavez Hawkins and dropped into the consolation bracket. Vaughan later defeated Sahuaro's Adrian Villasenor, 6-2. He'll wrestle again today in hopes of qualifying for the medal round. Bears' 138-pounder Logan Kellogg won his opening-round match, 8-1, over Gila Ridge's Jason Riley. However, Kellogg was pinned by Marcos de Niza's Ryan Sondrop, the No. 2 seed, in 5:47 in the winners' bracket quarters. Kellogg will wrestle in the consolation bracket today in hopes of qualifying for the medal round. Bears' 170-pounder Russ Dodge lost his first-round match by forfeit to Lake Havasu's Jaylen Nelson and dropped into the consolation bracket. Kofa's Josh McDonald subsequently eliminated Dodge from the tournament. Dodge, a senior, finished his season with a 38-10 record. Badgers' 182-pounder Josh Romo won his first-round match by forfeit over Tolleson's Anthony Torres, but was pinned in 3:34 by Catalina Foothills' James Dick in the winners' bracket quarterfinals.
