Obituary: Margaret "Peg" B. Luker

Mrs. Margaret "Peg" B. Luker of Prescott, Ariz., passed away peacefully at Marley House on Oct. 20, 2012. She was 85 years old. She was born to Mary Hazel and Henry David Burpitt in College Park, Ga. Her mom died when she was 12, then her dad when she was 16. She was then lovingly raised by her aunts.

She graduated early from high school to attend Northwestern University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in drama. She married Ph.D. James A. Luker in 1948, and they had four children.

Peggie was kind, generous, beautiful, vivacious and independent. She lit up the room when she walked in. Wherever she went she made friends and spread her enthusiasm and love of life, education, children, animals, travel and the great outdoors. She enjoyed skiing, hiking, swimming and ice-skating.

She became an educator and taught elementary school as well as college courses. She gave her love of dramatics to all the schoolchildren of Cazenovia, where for years she had a summer drama club.

Jim and Peg retired in 1982, and moved to Prescott, Ariz., where they were avid hikers and enrolled in many courses at Yavapai College. They joined the Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Peggie was a docent at Heritage Park Zoo.

Her devoted husband passed away in May of 2010.

She is survived by her four children, Laurie Luker, Linda Luker, James A. Luker Jr. and Julie Hamada. She has six grandchildren, Lee and Jeff Luker, John Ginsberg, Michelle, Akemi and Beau Hamada.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at The Unitarian Universalist Congregation. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Peg's name to the Heritage Park Zoo, 1403 Heritage Park Road, Prescott, AZ 86301.
