Yavapai College big bands perform an evening of jazz

The Yavapai College big bands, the Trailblazers and the Roughriders will perform an Evening of Jazz at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22.

This will be the bands' first concert since musicians won individual recognition awards for excellence and the Trailblazers won first place at the Reno Jazz Festival in April.

Admission to the concert is $7 and free for children ages 14 and under. Tickets are available online at www.ycpac.com/all-events, the Performing Arts Center box office or by calling 776-2000 during business hours.

The Trailblazers, directed by Roy Breiling, will perform "A New Day," a bright jazz-style chart by Sammy Nestico that features soloist Bill West; "A Night in Tunisia," a jazz standard by Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli, featuring soloist Derek Young; and "Isfahan," from the award-winning 1992 album Lush Life, by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, featuring soloist David Russell on bass flute.

The Roughriders will play "Amazing Grace," which opens with a brass chorale that breaks into a gospel rock shout and was arranged by Dave Rivello. Then "Aim High," a unique, sparkling, hip-hop shuffle by Fred Sturm, and "Back to the Basement" by Bret Zvacek, featuring soloist Pam Burr.
