1917-2012

Barbara Goddard Johnstone, 94, died on Feb. 26, 2012, in Chandler, Ariz. She was born in Dandridge, Tenn., on April 6, 1917. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1938, Barbara married in 1940 and moved to Arizona in 1946. She lived in Arizona for the remainder of her life with the exception of two years spent in Iran.

Barbara earned a master's degree from the University of Arizona and worked as a teacher and administrator for the Tucson Public Schools from 1953 to 1972. The years 1967 to 1969, spent as a guidance counselor at the Tehran American School, were the highlight of her career. Prior to going to Iran, she was the head of the Office of Testing and Measurement, and after returning from Iran, she established the kindergarten program for the Tucson Public Schools.

Barbara was predeceased by her husbands, James J. Riley of Tucson and Shelby C. Johnstone of Sedona, Ariz. She is survived by two daughters, Ellen Rowe of Phoenix, Ariz., and Judith Amesbury of Talofofo, Guam; as well as their children and grandchildren.
