Clare "Cal" "Picks" Callaway, age 97, 3591 Bearskin Creek Lane, Tomahawk, Wis., passed away Sept. 15, 2011, at Ministry St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander.

Cal was born Jan. 9, 1914, in Chippewa Falls, the son of Richard and Rosa Belle (Sabin) Callaway. He was a graduate of Wausau Senior High School, where he played halfback and cornerback with the football team. He worked as a dental technician. Cal formerly lived in the Madison, Wis., and Prescott, Ariz., areas, where he was a member of The Barbershop Quartet. He recently moved to Tomahawk to be near his family. Cal enjoyed woodworking - making furniture and clocks until he was 96 years old. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling, oil painting, and raised parakeets. He was an avid musky fisherman, avid snowmobiler and an avid Arizona Diamondbacks fan.

Survivors include sons David (Pam) Callaway of Tomahawk, Gerald Dean (Janelle) Callaway of Phoenix, Ariz. and Richard (Maria) Callaway of New Braunsfels, Texas. Cal is further survived by six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A Memorial service for Clare "Cal" "Picks" Callaway will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at Nitardy Funeral Home, 208 N. Park St., Cambridge, WI 53523. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, from 1 p.m. until the time of services at 2 p.m.
