Obituary: William J. and Edna W. Fleishman

Mr. William J. Fleishman, 88, died May 12, 2010, in Prescott, Ariz., after a short illness. He was born in Ravenna, Ohio, May 13, 1921, and was the son of the late William J. and Elizabeth C. Fleishman. Mr. Fleishman served in the U.S. Army in Europe and N. Africa in World War II. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a bachelor's degree in Forestry from Utah State University. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, retiring with 30 years of service.

Mrs. Edna W. Fleishman, 82, died Aug. 24, 2006, in Prescott, Ariz., following a recurrence of breast cancer. She was born in Ravenna, Ohio, on Oct. 11, 1923, and was the daughter of the late William and Dora Walters. She was a 1941 graduate of Ravenna High School and attended Kent State University for three years, leaving to marry Mr. Fleishman. They remained married for 60 years, living in remote Forest Service ranger stations as well as in Flagstaff, Prescott and Phoenix. After her children were grown, Mrs. Fleishman worked for the U.S. Census Bureau and was a volunteer for various progressive political causes. For many years she ran Democratic Party headquarters in Yavapai County.

During his retirement, Mr. Fleishman built by hand, a primitive cabin on 40 acres of land the couple owned near Ash Fork, Ariz. They spent many satisfying hours in the solitude of this cabin.

Mr. and Mrs. Fleishman were preceded in death by their first son, James, who died in infancy. Survivors include four other sons, Dick of Flagstaff, Charlie of San Diego, Calif., Ted of Las Vegas, Nev. and Thomas of Grand Junction, Colo.; daughter Jane of Nashville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; Mr. Fleishman's brother Earl Kenneth; and Mrs. Fleishman's sisters, Ruby Walters and Laura Troyer; and her brother Boyd Walters, all of Ravenna, Ohio.

The couple's children are hosting an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at 610 Flora St., Prescott, Ariz., to which all friends are invited.
