William Calvin Lyon "Papa," age 86, passed away on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in Prescott VA Hospice. He was born on Nov. 2, 1923, in Konawa, Okla., to Anthony Foster and Lottie Lyon.

William served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945 and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. In 1992, he received the Remember Pearl Harbor medal from the Governor's office. He was a founding member of the Prescott Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and served as Club Chaplin and current President. He married, Constance "Connie." William started with the Arizona Republic Newspaper in 1968. While still working for the paper, they moved to Prescott in 1971. He retired from the Arizona Republic in 1986. He spent his post retirement working in his wood shop making beautiful wooden pens, bowls, letter openers and lamps. His shop became known in the area as "Papa's Wood Shop." He was a faithful member of the Willow Hills Baptist Church.

William was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Foster and Lottie Lyon; and sister, Bea Beloat. He is survived by his wife, Constance "Connie" Lyon of Prescott Valley; children, Bill (Cynthia) Lyon of Paulden, Ariz., Anna (Lee) Barclay of Phoenix, Ariz., Art (Leanna) Lyon of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Cindy (Pete) Bormanis of Phoenix, Ariz., Teri "Tedi" (Ron) Hollabaugh of Siloam Springs, Ark.; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Anthony Lyon; and beloved dog, Ginger.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at the Willow Hills Baptist Church, 1071 Mogollon Road, Prescott, Ariz. A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at the VA National Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in William's name to the Willow Hills Baptist Church, 1071 Mogollon Road, Prescott, AZ 86301 or the Prescott Harbor Survivor Association, 1225 Gardenia Lane, Prescott, AZ 86305.
