Obituary: Lena Elizabeth Morriston

Lena Elizabeth Morriston, 95, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at the Arizona Pioneers' Home. She was born May 7, 1915, in Grindstone, Pa., to Melvin and Elizabeth (Burton) Guseman.

In September 1933, she married George G. Morriston. She suffered from asthma and the doctor told her, "Go to Arizona!" So in 1943, they packed up the car, house trailer and kids and left for Phoenix. Fifteen days and many flat tires later, the family arrived in Prescott, where they decided to stay. She loved her garden and would coax wonderful vegetables from it in spite of the hot Arizona summers. Raising five boys, she learned to be thrifty and was known to shop frequently at her favorite store, Sally's. She was most proud of her kitchen and produced good, old-fashioned meals every day. She was very generous; no one ever left her home without a jar of jelly or loaf of bread.

Lena was predeceased by her husband George in 1995 and her son Gary in 1971. She is survived by her sons and their wives Melvin and Josefine Morriston of Lake Havasu, Ariz., Curtis and Betty Morriston of Riverside, Calif., Donald and Linda Morriston of Mesa, Ariz., and Arthur and Karla Morriston of Prescott, Ariz.; her sisters Edna, Ruth and Dorothy; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at the Oddfellows Cemetery, 400 S. Virginia Ave., Prescott. The family would like to thank the Arizona Pioneers' Home nurses and staff for their tender care of Lena. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Arizona Pioneers' Home Foundation in memory of Lena.

When asked what she wanted to be remembered for, Lena replied, "kindness." Mom, you aced that one.
