4A-I State PlayoffsPrescott boys 5Sabino 3The Badgers are alive and well in the state playoffs, and find themselves one win from playing for the biggest tennis prize in school history.The boys finished off Tucson's Sabino Tuesday at PHS to advance to the state's team Final Four. No Prescott tennis team, boys or girls, has ever advanced to a team state championship match.And the Badgers won in clutch fashion.With doubles up first, Prescott found itself trailing the match 1-0 early. That's when Jamison Phelps and Nikil Selvam teamed up for an 8-6 win in the No. 2 spot to pull even. And the No. 3 team of Robbie Schultz and Jimmy Siegler overcame a 3-6 deficit to win their match 8-6, and lift PHS to a 2-1 lead entering singles.Phelps (6-4, 6-1) and No. 3 Dylan Barnes (6-0, 6-0) cruised in their sets before No. 6 Max Grenier clinched the match with his 7-5, 6-1 victory.The 3-seeded Badgers march on to the 4A-I state semifinals this Friday (4 p.m.) at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. Their opponent, 2-seeded Catalina Foothills, the four-time defending state champions, eliminated Thunderbird 5-0 Tuesday in its second straight shutout of the tournament.A win Friday would qualify Prescott for the 4A-I state championship on Saturday, also at Paseo.The last Yavapai County tennis team to win a state title, boys or girls, was Cottonwood's Mingus Union boys' team in 1983.4A-I State PlayoffsCatalina Foothills 5Prescott girls 0After Chaparral ended its run of eight consecutive state championships this past spring, Foothills looks primed to reclaim its title.Foothills dispatched of the 10-seeded Lady Badgers 5-0 in Tuesday's 4A-I quarterfinals in Tucson. It's the team's second straight 5-0 win of the tournament.Foothills, the 2-seed, advances to Friday's semifinals to meet 6-seed Sunnyslope. Top-seeded Millennium and 4-seed Chaparral meet in the other semifinal.The state championship is Saturday.4A-II State PlayoffsSeton Catholic 5Bradshaw Mtn. boys 3The Bears' postseason run came to an end Tuesday in Chandler.The tournament's 4-seed, Seton Catholic, eliminated 5-seeded Bradshaw Mountain in the quarterfinal round. Seton advances to meet 1-seed Arcadia in Friday's 4A-II semifinals.With doubles up first, Nick and Bob Berardi, fresh off their semifinal doubles appearance at state last week, won 8-5 in the No. 1 slot. Singles wins for No. 2 Nick Berardi (7-6, 6-1) and No. 4 Gaston Tiede (6-1, 6-4) weren't enough to power past Seton.4A-II State PlayoffsNotre Dame 5Bradshaw Mtn. girls 0Notre Dame, the two-time defending 4A-II state champions, knocked the 7-seeded Lady Bears from the bracket with its second straight shutout of the tournament Tuesday in Scottsdale.The 2-seeded Saints face 6-seed Verrado in Friday's quarterfinals, while 1-seed Buckeye and 4-seed Sahuarita meet to decide the other qualifier for this Saturday's state championship.
