Letter: People should ponder tax credits to schools

EDITOR:

The Arizona tuition tax credit has benefited many low-income and minority students at both private and public schools since 1999, while saving the state money.

As a private school tuition organization, the Orme Primavera Schools Foundation has helped Arizona students receive an exceptional independent, non-sectarian, private school education.

Donors have received a state tax credit and a federal tax deduction in the process. The Orme Primavera Schools Foundation completely distributes its donations to qualified students every year, meaning those students and their families who meet standards of financial need as set by the financial aid committees of both schools and the Foundation.

We always welcome the opportunity to make a great program even better and strongly support state efforts to increase transparency and accountability, because we have always operated within the letter and spirit of the law.

The tax incentives offered through the Orme Primavera Schools Foundation can be an important strategy for your charitable giving and income tax management goals. A married couple filing jointly may give a maximum of $1,000 annually and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit from the State of Arizona. Single taxpayers may give as much as $500.

Additionally, taxpayers can give as much as $400 to the public school of their choice, and as much as $400 to a "working poor charity" of their choice. Contributions must be received by Dec. 31 for credit on your 2009 taxes.

Your support is a win-win for you and Arizona students at both the public and private schools. Please call me at 445-5382 for further information.
