A three-vehicle crash at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday closed Willow Creek Road and Highway 89 for several hours, police said.
The actions of 34-year-old Daniel Arthur Beasley of Chino Valley appear to have caused the crash, according to a press release.
Police said Beasley was speeding north on Willow Creek Road approaching the intersection of Highway 89, and his vehicle went left of center and left the roadway.
Beasley apparently overcorrected as he passed a Chevy Suburban that was also northbound on Willow Creek Road. Nicole McComack, 32, of Chino Valley was driving the Suburban. Beasley's vehicle then struck the front of McComack's vehicle forcing it off the roadway.
Beasley's vehicle then continued through the intersection of Willow Creek Road and Highway 89, where it hit the front of a Nissan SUV operated by 26-year-old Stormy Hanson, also of Chino Valley.
The collision caused Hanson's vehicle to roll onto its side, slide for a short distance, and then roll back onto its wheels coming to a stop just north of the intersection.
Beasley's vehicle continued northeast along McCurdy Drive past Bar Heart Drive, went through a split rail fence and came to rest on the golf course. The accident partially ejected Beasley, and he was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment. As of 9 a.m. today, he is in critical condition.
Police said they smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Beasley and believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
McComack, who is approximately 8 months pregnant, was transported to YRMC to be checked out and was later released without being admitted. Hanson and her two children who were in the vehicle with her were all transported to YRMC with non-incapacitating injuries and released.
Because of the complexity of the scene and the severity of the crash, authorities closed Highway 89 between Pioneer Parkway and the Outer Loop Road in Chino Valley to divert traffic around the intersection allowing officers to conduct an investigation.
This crash is still under investigation and charges are pending.
