Police Brief: Man seriously injured in wreck

The following is a police brief from the Prescott Valley Police Department:

On 06/11/07 at approximately 1445 hours there was a two vehicle, injury collision at the intersection of Rockland Drive and Horseshoe Lane in Prescott Valley.

Vehicle #1: 1991 Honda four door sedan driven by Seana Kathleen Smith, age 18, of Prescott.

Vehicle #2: 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Thomas B Gilpin, age 44 of Prescott Valley.

The Honda was traveling west on Horseshoe Lane and turning onto Rockland Drive. There is a Yield sign at that intersection. The motorcycle was traveling north on Rockland Drive. The driver of the Honda failed to yield to the motorcycle and the two vehicles collided as the Honda entered the intersection.

Gilpin was transported, via helicopter, to John C Lincoln Hospital North for head injuries as well as internal injuries. Gilpin was not wearing a protective helmet. Smith was not injured in the accident, but was checked by CYFD and released at the scene.

Officers on scene determined that Smith was exhibiting signs of impairment. She was checked for possible drug impairment by PVPD Drug Recognition Experts and was determined to be under the influence of drugs. Information was received that Gilpin may have also been under the influence of drugs.

Smith was subsequently charged with multiple felonies including Aggravated DUI (Drugs), Aggravated Assault, Endangerment, Criminal Damage, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Child Abuse, as her one-month-old child was in the vehicle at the time of the collision. Smith was transported to the Yavapai County Jail and booked for the above listed crimes.

An officer was sent to Phoenix to obtain a blood sample for Gilpin and it will be processed by the DPS crime lab. Charges on Gilpin are pending the results of the blood test.

As of 0900 hours 06/12-07 Gilpin was listed in stable condition with head injuries, several broken bones and multiple internal injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
