The weekly Prescott Valley Tribune is expanding to twice-a-week publication effective this week in response to population growth.
"The population in the area has grown, the commercial base is growing as well, and the people's information needs are increasing with the growth," said Ben Hansen, executive editor of Prescott Newspapers Inc. PNI publishes the Daily Courier, Tribune, the weekly Chino Valley Review, Big Bug Canyon Country News and the Sun Shopper.
The Tribune, currently published on Wednesdays, will be able to provide more timely coverage with the addition of a Friday paper, managing editor Jerry Herrmann said. Herrmann, also managing editor of the weekly Big Bug Canyon Country News that serves outlying communities, said he came on board Sept. 27 in part to make the move to twice-weekly publication.
"We will be better able to better cover the local happenings in the community, and we are hoping that twice-a -week (publication) will have more space as we grow so we can get more local news," Herrmann said.
The Wednesday paper has been running about 20 pages over the past few weeks, he said. The Tribune has more than 14,000 subscribers. It reaches every home in Prescott Valley. It goes to Courier subscribers in town as an insert in the Courier and individually to homes of non-subscribers.
The additional edition will mean more coverage of wedding and engagement announcements, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and sports, Herrmann said, adding that next Wednesday's newspaper will feature the Tribune's first business page.
The Tribune started as a newsletter 32 years ago and eventually evolved into a weekly newspaper. Western Newspapers Inc., the Yuma-based parent company of PNI, bought the Tribune in 1985.
The addition of a Friday paper means the Tribune will have two deadlines for submitting press releases. Herrmann said. He said the deadlines are noon Monday for Wednesday's paper and the same time Wednesday for Friday.
However, Herrmann recommends submitting items by 5 p.m. Friday for Wednesday publication and the same time Tuesday for Friday's paper.
