PRESCOTT - When authorities found a pickup truck belonging to a missing Maricopa County man in the Bloody Basin area of Yavapai County on March 17, authorities began the hunt for 81-year-old Fred Lindsey of New River.
According to a Yavapai County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) report, Lindsey's family reported him missing from his New River home on Feb. 18. Following the discovery of his abandoned truck, Yavapai County Search and Rescue, tracking dogs and Maricopa County Sheriff's detectives began the search.
Family members also arrived in the general area and asked to conduct their own search, the report says.
The victim's grandson, Brandon Lindsey, who is an off-duty policeman from Surprise, Ariz., stated he and two other family members began searching at about 6 a.m. on Saturday, according to the report. Following Forest Road 16 from where the truck was located to a spot 15 miles north of the intersection at Bloody Basin Road (FR 269), they discovered Lindsey's body lying in the brush about 250 feet from the road. The grandson reportedly notified the authorities.
A medical examiner will perform an autopsy but authorities believe that the victim died from natural causes, the report says.
