Family in disbelief over manslaughter sentence

PRESCOTT – The family of the elderly couple that died in a May 2003 car accident walked out of the courtroom on Tuesday in disbelief that the woman who caused the crash received only six months of jail time and seven years intensive probation.

Elizabeth Matthews faced a prison-term of 20-plus years after she pleaded guilty to two Class 2 felonies of vehicular manslaughter and a Class 6 felony of vehicular endangerment.

An elderly Bullhead City couple, Ivan and Olinda Emley, who were visiting their son John Faulkner and his family in Paulden and were on their way home, died in the accident. Matthews and two other victims suffered minor injuries.
