9/26/2009 10:01:00 PM Letter: Leash law fidelity draws kudos from one
EDITOR:
Kudos to the Sheriff's posse for enforcing the leash law!
I just want to thank the individual from the Sheriff's posse for enforcing the leash law.
I frequent the trails and lakes in the Prescott area with my leashed dogs and I am tired of having to ask people to leash their dogs and hear the excuse that their dogs are "friendly."
It doesn't matter. If there is a dominance issue between our dogs a fight may ensue. Besides - it's the law! The leash laws allow all of us to enjoy these nice areas with our dogs. Rarely are these areas free of people with or without dogs.
There are very nice dog parks where dogs can be off leash. Thank you again for enforcing the leash laws and please continue to do so.

OBEYING THE LAW
To Give Me a Break: I have a new concept for you to try to digest. It's called "OBEYING THE LAW", which is there for good reason. Or do you run red lights and stop signs because you haven't hit anyone yet?

I LOVE dogs, and I'm sure there are few dogs better behaved than mine, and I am not afraid of the occasional loose dog. BUT my dog is always on the leash on a trail. I have no idea if any or all the other people on the trail have had bad experiences with dogs and are scared witless of dogs. As the dog owner, it isn't about MY comfort level, it's what I don't know about OTHERS' comfort level. In the forest or meadows, I think off-leash is fine.

Give me a break
I have lived in Prescott about 10 years. I am retired and have hiked the local trails virtually every day, at least 3000 times. On those hikes I have run into dogs off leash at least several hundred times. It has never been a problem. All you folks that are so terrified of the family dog off leash should spend a little time in the real world. I'm amazed at the ridiculous things people get worked up over. Geez, grow up.

Rick, .....if i ride one of my horses on the trail am i in danger of your dogs charging at my horse and if i fall off and get hurt then are you going to pay my hospital bill since it would be your fault for not leashing your friendly socialized dogs. Also then are you going to give my husband the money to help raise our child to adulthood if i should die.......leash laws are a good thing it prevents aggressive dogs from getting at the more friendly dogs and makes it more possible to pull them apart before they can latch on and socializing has nothing to do with the leash law.....dogs are very unpredictable and can change in a heart beat and there is nothing that any of us can do about it.......smarten up and be part of the solution and not part of the problem.....

Leash 'em!
Bravo Posse! Perhaps I'll return to the trails again knowing that all those "friendly" dogs are not leashed. I wonder what would happen if someone shot a "friendly" dog if they felt threatened....

I am not going to leash my dogs in My Forests.
I am sick of these premptive "laws" That's what courts are for. If there are damages let a jury decide. If your dogs are so poorly socialized maybe you shouldn't be allowed to own them. I may challenge you to a duel (oh there are laws against THAT too)

Right on, Ann! Our dogs are happy enough just to be out and smelling everything. They do not need to be at large, no matter how fabulous they behave. There are too many variables out there, and even a sweet doggy will get excited. We love 'em.

I was at PetSmart yesterday. After having read so many comments here about people's dogs being friendly and don't need a leash, I noticed a sign at PetSmart. It said that all pets are welcome if they have vaccinations and are on leashes. If a pet friendly store requires a leash, why would it not be smart to use one outside where there are so many more things to tempt a dog? Maybe they know that dogs can be unpredictable?
