Prep Basketball: Sapien has career night in Mayer's season opener

Alex Sapien pulled down a career-best 21 rebounds and Blake Ambrose and Tony Warburton scored 14 points apiece to lead the Mayer boys basketball team to a 58-49 season-opening win over host Camp Verde on Monday.

Mayer (1-0) led 15-8 after the first quarter, but Camp Verde outscored the Wildcats 13-12 in the second quarter to climb back into the game.

While Mayer missed 11 of its first 19 free throws, it went 11 for 16 in the fourth quarter to seal the win

Sapien, Jacob Martinez and Dimitri Campbell had nine points apiece. Campbell also had 12 rebounds, while Martinez dished out six assists.

Mayer will play at the Orme School on Dec. 1
