Truck crashes through Prescott building
The Daily Courier

A pickup truck crashed through the front of a Prescott building on Monday, seriously injuring a woman working at her desk inside.

At 9 a.m. Monday, Lauren McCracken, 23, of Kirkland, pulled into a parking space at People Who Care at 1024 Willow Creek Road, said Sgt. Tim Fletcher, traffic section supervisor of the Prescott Police Department.

McCracken, hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, sending her 2007 Chevy truck over the curb and into the building, hitting a desk where a 49-year-old Prescott Valley woman was working, Fletcher said. The impact pushed the victim backward into another desk along the wall behind her.

Central Yavapai Fire District, Prescott Fire Department and LifeLine Ambulance treated her at the scene, Fletcher said. LifeLine Ambulance drove her to Yavapai Regional Medical Center West for further treatment.

The victim remained in serious condition late Monday afternoon at Yavapai Regional Medical Center, Fletcher said. A helicopter will fly her to a trauma center in Phoenix as soon as weather permits, he said.

Police don't suspect driver impairment, and the crash remains under investigation.

Just a little advice from someone who has a little experience in stuff like this. Your comment may not be the best idea; announcing in a public forum that your sister has prior injuries may not help her in settling this insurance claim...

What makes you think she has a license? Was she on the phone or texting? I bet she was an old person in disguise, maybe thinking she was at the doughnut shop drive up window.

Police don't suspect driver impairment? Really, because if you can't figure out which is the brake pedal, I'm guessing your "impairment" is that you can't drive. Revoke her license! I mean she was just parking for gosh sake. What if she was going through a crosswalk full of children or something. I hope she doesn't (try to) park inside a garage at home.

I just asked my boss to put steel reinforcements on the outside wall of our building to protect my life. Obviously a sarcastic remark but how terrifying for this woman. People please pay attention, it is not that hard and if you dont you will pay for the rest of your life knowing the people that you have hurt.

We leave the outrage for the old people at the doughnut shop. This was an accident but I'm sure you will try hard to make it about something it is not. Hey its time for your metamucil.

Article comment by: Bring Back Clutches

At least with a clutch, you have a two out of three chance of hitting a pedal which will not cause damage! Problem is, I'm not sure that you can buy a car or truck with a clutch any longer!

Maybe we should ban automatics so that these people would never be able to get their car out of the garage!

Why does this seem to happen so much here? Maybe is doesn't and maybe because it's such a small town these events become news whereas in Phoenix you pretty much have to kill someone to make the news. This is the 4th car in the last year or so that's showed up in a building because the driver hit the gas instead of the brake. It's not just geezers either, this lady was 23.

Hmmm parking and texting don't mix. Obviously this young girl does not care to pay attention so what is she doing in a parking lot of a place called "People Who care"?

Where are all the "rough writers declaring "old drivers" shouldn't be allowed to drive. I assume a double standard, age related, exists for accident expectations.

How terrible! I wish the best of luck to the innocent woman who was injured and her family, and I pray the driver has her license suspended. How does this keep happening? If everyone remembers correctly, last summer a similar incident happened downtown, the lady forgot which pedal was which and she hit several people on the sidewalk. I was personally in an accident downtown where the man behind me forgot which peal was which and accelerated right into my stopped car. How on earth do people "accidentally" hit the gas rather than the brake? Especially when parking, when you are suppose to be going slow anyways? The brake is on the LEFT and is a much larger pedal than the gas on the RIGHT. You'd think you'd be able to distinguish easily between the 2 in any situation. More my question, how do they obtain a license in the first place? God forbid we throw in a clutch, then you'd have 3 pedals for the drivers around here to guess which one is the correct one to press.
