PRESCOTT - When the Prescott Unified School District Governing Board hires a new superintendent this spring, one of the first tasks he or she will have is to hire or appoint a new human resources director.

Dr. Chris Reynolds, who has served as the district's human resources director for the past nine years, submitted his resignation effective June 30, 2010.

Reynolds told the governing board Tuesday evening that after he retires he is moving to Costa Rica.

Reynolds made his announcement at the end of the board's Dec. 1 regular meeting.

The governing board met in special session Tuesday afternoon to determine a salary range and discuss benefits for a new PUSD superintendent.

The board agreed on a salary range of $100,000 to $120,000, as well as offering the new superintendent a two-year contract. Any benefits, such a car allowance, will be included in the base salary, not to exceed $120,000.

Board President Dr. Andy Newton recommended the district eliminate the car allowance as he considers it "confusing." Newton said the car allowance should be part of the superintendent's salary.

"The car thing is goofy," Newton said.

Based on the number of students and the number of employees in the district, board member Tina Seeley said the superintendent "oversees a lot of people. CEOs of corporations manage fewer people."

While considering health insurance benefits and sick/personal leave, board member Steve Campbell said the superintendent "should be subject to the same parameters as other district employees."

The new superintendent could earn and accrue sick time at the same rate as other district administrators, according to policy. District administrators can accrue 70 sick leave days that are eligible for the buy-back policy after 10 years of service.

As part of the search process, the governing board wants community participation in determining the qualities, character, credentials, skills and attitudes important in a new superintendent.

Community members can visit the district website at www.prescottschools.com and complete an online survey. District officials will gather information from the survey through Dec. 14.

The Arizona School Board Association, which the governing board has hired to assist with the superintendent search, will compile the survey results and present them to the board in an executive summary.

The governing board will meet at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 to determine and approve a superintendent profile.

Yeah - living in Costa Rica sure would suck. Not. Although I wouldn't doubt many denizens of this area would hate it. Few white people, harder to buy meth, no more awesome friday nights at the Wal-Mart. Yeah - Costa Rica probably would suck for you...

Thankless job? You are either uninformed or uneducated about the situation. PUSD thanked him every two weeks to the tune of $90K for the last 4 years. How is that thankless?

The guy is moving to Costa Rica? Who's taking bets on how long that will last? Sure, it may sound good now, but just wait and see what a couple years of living in "paradise" will actually be like. And on the matter of a new Superintendent: how utterly idiotic is it to consider giving someone a "car allowance", who will already be making over 100 grand in Prescott, AZ? "Confusing" indeed.

Let the good old boys fall- how many more people will leave since their buddy is retiring? Now if we could get the slacker teachers to leave PUSD would have a shot at quality education. Wow what a difference a state audit will make!!!
