Teens smoking more 'Spice,' police say; incense-like substance not illegal, but can produce dangerous side effects
Lisa Irish
The Daily Courier

Prescott police have noticed an increase in the number of teens and probationers who smoke Spice, and urge parents to look out for serious side effects of its use.

"Based on the fact that Spice is not illegal, the documentation of the number of cases is not tracked, but our officers have noticed an increase in people using it and talking about it," said Lt. Andy Reinhardt, spokesman for the Prescott Police Department.

Spice, an herbal incense, is sprayed with chemicals that affect the brain like marijuana, but contains no illegal substances yet offers a high almost identical to natural marijuana, Reinhardt said.

People smoking Spice definitely get high but they're also experiencing serious side effects, Reinhardt said.

If parents notice severe side effects such as severe agitation, seizures, loss of consciousness, elevated heart rate, vomiting, and pale skin, they need to find out if their teen has taken Spice, call the U.S. Poison Control hotline at 1 (800) 222-1222, and seek professional medical assistance, Reinhardt advised.

The side effects from using Spice can damage the central nervous system or lead to respiratory failure that can cause death.

Spice, which looks like dried herbs, is packaged in small vials, packets or bottles, with the warning "not for human consumption" written in small print in a color close to the label's background color.

Spice, also known as JWH-018, is sold mostly to teens and adults looking for a legal high under many brand names, including K2 and Spice Gold at convenience stores, health stores, smoking shops, and on the Internet for as much as $55 for three grams, Obsidian DeLeau, a substance abuse counselor at West Yavapai Guidance Clinic said at a MATForce seminar this past February.

It's marketed as an incense or potpourri that is not for human consumption, but users smoke it like marijuana to get high and it does not register on drug tests.

"Teens may reason that they can get high at the same cost of buying real pot, pass any drug test and truly not do anything illegal," Reinhardt said. "Because of this, Spice is also common amongst probationers."

Pima County recently completed a study with their juvenile probationers in which 40 percent of the juveniles tested positive for Spice, Reinhardt said. Because of the dangers reported in the use of Spice, it has been banned in numerous countries as well as in 13 states. Yavapai County's MATForce is currently promoting legislation to make Spice illegal in Arizona.

In late October, a 15-year-old boy who allegedly smoked Spice and drank alcohol in Prescott was found unconscious on a sidewalk in the 200 block of South Montezuma Street. Emergency medical personnel treated the teen and later took him to Yavapai Regional Medical Center West for further treatment.

An officer spoke with a man at the scene who told him the teen had been smoking Spice and drinking alcohol. About 20 minutes later, the officer answered a call about an intoxicated teen in the men's bathroom at the courthouse plaza and found a 17-year-old boy who was kneeling on the floor, crying and spitting everywhere. The teen told the officer he had smoked a little bit of Spice.

In July, two men and a teenager were taken to Yavapai Regional Medical Center West after they became combative and experienced hallucinations after smoking Spice. Prescott police found a teenage boy bleeding from the back of his head being held on the ground by a man in the 400 block of Whetstine Avenue, according to a police report.

Emergency responders found the two men and the teenager nauseous, vomiting, agitated and anxious in the front yard of a home, said Eric Kriwer, spokesman for the Prescott Fire Department. The men told police shortly after they and the teen smoked the Spice they bought at a convenience store, the teen began screaming and freaking out.

The men got the teen to kneel on the ground and tried to calm him down, but when one of the men tried to hold him down, the teen flopped backwards, hit his head on a large rock in the yard, and one witness called 911, according to the police report. As firefighters and paramedics tried to treat the teen, he became combative, lost and regained consciousness, and it took several officers to hold the teen down, said Sgt. Clayton Heath, of the Investigations Section of the Prescott Police Department.

"This was the first incident where we had contact with Spice," Kriwer said. "We're still learning about it. We have no meds to treat it in our paramedic kit."

Officers noticed both men had extremely heavy body tremors, resting heart rates of over 140 beats per minute, and showed signs of paranoia.

"One man was hallucinating and talking about seeing demons and Jesus," Heath said.

The other man told officers he felt nervous, had a hard time focusing, and that he thought the walls and ceiling of the hospital room seemed to be moving.

"This man said the Spice he took was sold under the name Judgment Day," Heath said. "The man said he had smoked the stuff in the past, but not this particular brand."

"Their reaction was similar to overdosing on street drugs," Kriwer said. "Often times people think if it's not illegal that it's safe, but that's not always the case."

Spice is the worst. I don't see why spice is legal but pot is illegal. People die off spice, no one dies off weed.

This stuff is the worst chemical I have ever put into my body and unfortunately I have tried a lot of different drugs in my past. But this stuff is by far the scariest experience I have ever had. I had symptoms of tacchycardia, respiratory issues, dizziness, sweating, anxiety, involuntary muscle twitches, my legs had trouble functioning. I also noticed slight discomfort in my stomach. All that was on one hit and I will never touch this stuff again. The manufacturers need to be shut down forever! And anyone who disagrees is obviously a moron! Stick to pot if you must get high. Or better yet just say no to everything.

"I also tried it maybe three other times after"

So after she felt like she was going to die after her first "experience", she goes and tries it three other times? Are you that stupid, or just that desperate to escape reality?

You tried this garbage one time while driving on the interstate? What were you thinking? I hope that this is not an indication of how many are driving while smoking this stuff. I may never drive on the interstate again!

I had never tried anything before in my life until spice. I'm 21 female and 125 pound 5'7''. My first time trying spice I was in the car with two guys and I was given some to try. I only took one hit and It felt good. Music was playing really loud. I felt like my head was moving back and fourth and I wasn't moving It and I started to feel like a cartoon. I looked over at the guy beside me and smiled. My head was still moving so I asked them if it was normal and they laughed at me and realized it was my first high. I started to hold my head down and told them I feel sick. My ears started ringing and my heart was pounding so hard. We pulled over on a drive ways and I started crying because It wouldn't go away. I felt like my mouth dried up and i had no saliva left. I was still crying cause i thought i was drying. I was thinking about my family and my my little brother. I remember they tried to get me out of the car for fresh air but i couldn't walk and my legs and body was shaking. My knees were so weak and shaking really bad. I also remember I couldn't say much and when i talked it's like i could hear myself. I also tried it maybe three other times after and had more bad experiences so I will never touch this stuff again or any other drug. There was one time i tried it while driving and I was on the interstate. I felt like everything slowed down and I felt like i couldn't drive to i took the next exit and told my friend to drive. I went to sleep since it made me so tired. The last time I tried it I started to touch my head and felt crazy and started crying really loudly. Spice makes me so emotional. I will never try this rubbish again.

Dear everyone. I am offering my knowledge and experience in the "spice" world. I have stories, tips, and almost the answer to every question about spice, and all similiar substances not called spice. (aka herbal incense) if you ever would like to ask, talk, or just be informed on the dangers, non-dangeres, and just about the drug in general... I invite you to email me... Please respect me as im trying to give people a complete and better understanding of the drug, and maybe a new outlook on the equation. Why? Ive heard many people talking about this drug, and not one I have heard has all of their facts straight. IM NOT bragging or anything, but I have been great in research about this drug. Many articles (no offense, such as this one) are a compilation of self experience and opinion. What seperates me from the articles and forums is that I took self opinion and threw it away. I took facts and applied it to experience. And in doing so, I can answer the question most people over look, "why?" there are bits and pieces of articles that do hold true statements. The problem is most are riddled with, like ill say again, false facts, opinions, and only personal experiences. Please feel free to contact. Iambtwg@gmail.com. If you want to-the-point, detailed, ACCURATE! Truthful, Information. No I'm not Being you, so please dont Bs me...

Today marks my Son’s 6th day from not smoking “Spice” in well over a year working up to as much as four times a day and I am so proud that I was able to rescue him. This has been the most traumatic experience of my life and I beg you if you are a user or know someone who is please, please stop or discourage them using this terrible drug. Please! My21 year son has always been a 4.0 student and he is now flunking out of college and has totally lost touch with reality. When he called me at work 6 days ago the hour and half drive to him could not have been longer, when I arrived he come to meet me at the door of his Fraternity house, bleeding, extreme heart rate, sweating profusely and crying. He could not distinguish between what was real and what wasn’t. He had attempted to jump from the third story of the building to “get away from the demons” the state of paranoia that he has been in has been unbelievable and unimaginable. He thought I was trying to kill him and has been afraid of everything even to the point of sleeping in the room alone. Over the past six days I have found from research that his story is pretty much the same as everyone else who has smoked this stuff. He is by no means normal at this point and this is 6 days clean but is improving each day. He requires 24 hour supervision due to the paranoia. I thank God that he saved my son from this awful nightmare and I also thank God that I have enough knowledge that I will lobby to have this awful drug banned from our local stores and away from society. It is now my goal to see this happen. If you are out there and you are smoking this, I beg you to stop! The “real” stuff is much less harmful to you. To all the parents out there….if you think you teen or young adult is smoking this do whatever you have to do but get them off of this! I wish I would have not let it go on so long but I didn’t realize the affects since it wasn’t illegal. I could tell you endless stories of the effects this has had on my son alone. To those who are smoking this and plan to continue to smoke it: I pray that God will have mercy on your life until you realize how dangerous this drug really is!

I've been smoking spice for about a year and its torn up my stomach. Some of you make me upset I still smoke pot and anyone who would attempt to compare the two are delusional. Also just because you've smoked spice and aren't having any issues doesn't make it safe. It is a new drug which means it hasn't been around long enough to know the dangers. The saddest thing about all of thisis that the war on drugs created an epidemic that never would've happened if we would just legalize weed.

O.K (Those) who say spice isn't bad, "You won't die, the reports of death are all pretty much crap" . Well you are WAY WRONG. My nephew just had a friend at school today that died from smoking it. Yes he had smoked it before and had no problems. Also last school year 2 other kids in the same school also died after smoking it. Understand just because you have smoked it before doesn't mean ____! It states "not for human consumption" Which means the chemicals that are put into it are not regulated. Any batch could be your last!

I thought I died and went to hell when I did it. I didn't expect it at all because I did it a lot before the time I almost died. I thought I was going to puke so I left the room and tried to go to the bathroom, then I blacked out. The next thing I remember is feeling confused and in a lot of pain. I thought I was in Hell that seemed never ending. Not the fire and demons kind of Hell, but way worse. It was complete and utter torture. I can't imagine anything being worse than the feeling I had. I didn't even know I had a body and I couldn't remember my past or my existence in general. I remember wondering why I would be created just to feel the anguish I was feeling. Finally, I heard panicking voices which reminded me that I had a body and I was human. So, I thought I was dead, or at least dying. I started screaming to God, asking his forgiveness and praying he would save me. It was the loudest scream I have ever screamed in my life, but I thought I was dead so I didn't know anyone could hear me. I thought it was all in my head, but apparently everyone in the dorm building heard me. People reactions to my screams made me realize I wasn't dead yet. The officers and the ER arrived and all I could say was "I'm dying". I didn't know I puked at all, but they said there was puke all over my face and all down the front of me. Apparently I was lying on the stairs with my mouth open, unresponsive, and eyes wide open, but I couldn't see a thing (I actually thought my eyes were closed the entire time). I went to the hospital. I would have died if no one found me. Apparently, after I blacked out (heading to the bathroom), I went past the bathroom and went up the stairs (not sure why I would do that). We think I fell down the stairs because I had many knots on my head. It was the most terrifying experience of my life. Two guys were with me when we were smoking it. One guy just got super nauseous and paranoid, and the other guy got violently sick but didn't have to go to the hospital. After this incident, we had a lot more left (it didn't take much at all to almost die from smoking this specific stuff), so the guy holding on to it didn't even ask, he just flushed it. We all were thankful we were alive and we didn't want that stuff in our sights ever again. PLEASE don't do it. I beg you. I had good experiences with it in the past, but that one time was enough to make me afraid. It's seriously not worth the risk. Both the officers and the doctors told me they'd rather me do weed instead of this "fake weed". They all agreed that the "fake weed" should be illegal. It is way more dangerous than weed. Alcohol is even more dangerous than weed. SODA is even more dangerous than weed in the long run. JUST PLEASE DON'T DO "FAKE WEED", "K2", "SPICE", SYNTHETIC WEED", ETC. It is extremely dangerous.

A few months ago I went to hang out with a friend it was my 18th birthday and I wanted to try a cigar for the first time so we drove to the nearest gas station and bought a generic mini cigarillo, when we got back home my friend pulled a packet of k2 out of his pocket I was curious and I asked him about it after he explained that it was a legal version of weed, I asked if I could try some we rolled some in a cigar wrapper then proceeded to light up after 1 hit I didn't feel anything so I took a second even bigger hit still nothing so I took 1 more large pull on it....it hit me like a brick wall time slowed down I started to say stupid things and the whole while I wanted to punch my self because to me I sounded extremely annoying at this point my heart rate was going so fast I began to panic I was wondering and praying that it would wear off after 6 hours it still hadn't worn off and my vision started to become distorted and shaky I look out the window and I thought there was a huge and scary lightning storm outside and my friend was trying to tell me that there was no storm I finally went to sleep on the floor and I woke up 8 hours later with the worst hangover I have ever had guys DO NOT DO SPICE! It was the worst experience of my life and if you decide to do it anyway take 1 small hit otherwise you will feel like you are going through hell!!!!

Dont be fooled into thinking this SPICE stuff is not harmeful. YES IT IS. My son smokes it daily, and has become an agry, sneaky, lying drug addict to this stuff. He would sell his right arm to get it. Its not illegal is what I hear, but so what. I have heard of at least 5 people having a bad experince from it, and vomiting, dizziness, and other side effects. Its poison, just like the other posts state. If you have any brain cells left, stay away from it. I dont want my son dead, or brain dead from a coma, seizure or any of the other BAD effects from this stuff. It does say 'NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION". If it were all that good, why does it say that on the packaging, and its a created chemical that some idiot made up and is now making a fortune off of, at the cost of these people that like the High that it gives for 30 min or so. I would almost rather that he smoke pot, at least that doesnt cause rapid heart rate, coma, seizures, and what ever else all these posts comment on. I read an article from a mother that her son commited suicide from it.. Is that enough to make you stop and think about it? How many kids are we gonna have to bury before someone steps up and says take this crap (killer) off the streets and arrest the sellers of it. My son has become someone I dont even know anymore. He is so angry all the time, craving it all the time, lying, stealing, ripping off his friends, and who knows what else just to get his next fix of spice. I am at a point of making him move out of my house, which will make him homeless because of it, but he still lies to me and sneaks around and does it behind my back. He was a pot smoker and I do not approve of that either, but pot made him happy, not like spice. He is evil, mean, and arguementative. If you are a parent and your kid starts acting like someone you dont know, then its the spice. Try to get it banned in your state, I am going to try to do the same before I have to bury my son. The scary part is the medical professionals dont know how to treat an overdose, they have to call poison control. POISON CONTROL-- WAKE UP PEOPLE !!!!!

the people on here stating people are idiots if we say we have hallucinated off of spice, are down right idiots themselves. spice is dangerous. obviously it may not effect everyone in a dangerous way,but its effected a good amount of people so therefor its not just one person or two people its alot. i myself just now had an experience. i smoked a small, very small amount of spice and right away it began kicking it. i can honestly say as i way lying on the bedroom floor my body felt like it was drifting away and that i was loosing conciousness. my heart was beating at a very fast rate.i began telling my friends i thought i was dying. i went into the bathroom and immediately following i was vomiting uncontrollably and non stop. i was hallucinating and tellin my friends that i was throwing up my insides, because thats what i thought. i remember praying and saying i was not ready to die yet,and to please not let me die.i was thowing up the lining of my stomache ,and then was choking on my own puke. i kept telling them to call the ambulance and they didnt, and i am okay now after sleeping and forcing myself to drink water and eat.but i still think i should have went to the hospital because at that point i was deathly ill. i wouldnt reccomend this use of spice to anyone. its unsafe and harmful.

I'm sure that there are many people in your field who have substance abuse issues, I have in my past but I certainly would not downplay the effect that they can have. I've in my past tried just about every drug that there is and I would not even use this crap, it's nothing but chemicals, I almost hate to say it, but people would be far better off just smoking weed rather than this (which costs way more than pot anyway)

Ok, so every time the outlaw something, something else, usually worse takes its place. Happy now?

Spice is 5 times more potent by weight than thc and it has the potential to get you much higher than you want to be. If you do not treat it with extreme caution and respect, it will kick your ... and you will think you are dying.

You won't die, the reports of death are all pretty much crap. But you may want to die for awhile until the effects of an overdose wear off.

How about we just legalize marijuana and stop with all this stupidity. I have yet to have marijuana hurt me as bad as 8 well gin and tonics. It seems to be a hell of a lot safer than alcohol.

This is all about politics and money. Always has been. The reasons marijuana was made illegal had nothing do do with its effects or dangers and everything to do with big business.

Now in this stupid fit of paranoia farmers can't even grow hemp, a plant which won't get you high no matter how much you smoke.

End the madness, legalize it, outlaw only mass production and transportation across state lines, crash the illegal market and remove all incentive for people to traffic and promote it.

I recently found "spice" in my son's room. He's 15. I have no clue about this drug. I dont know what it is, what it does or how harmful it is. I have been doing some research and this is the best information I have found. I noticed this past week or so my son has not been eating, he has had an upset stomach and has been feeling ill all week. He is also on prescribed medication so the effects of mixing the spice with the medication is worrisome as well. I just want to say thank you for creating this site and thank you for everyone's comments. Also, for those of you that are so worried about legalizing marijuana and calling people dumb or stupid because you dont agree with the personal experiences they are sharing in all reality ... If you had half a brain you would know everyone's body is different. People react differently to things. What doesnt effect you very well could have an adverse effect on another. Your comments should be disregarded and you should go back and read what you put and realize how uneducated you are making yourselves sound. Ok, so they had bad experiences and you didnt. That doesnt make them liars. It means their bodies didnt react like your did. Anyway, thank you again for the useful information. Good luck to all of you!

I have just had my first experience with this drug. YES!!!! DRUG!!! My 15 yr old daughter smoked SPICE on Friday evening, within 20 mins of her doing so, we were called by the paramedics to come to her location. She was not lucid at all, her heart rate was above 150 and she was not breathing, they immediately transported her to the hospital where we spent 8 hours watching our daughter almost DIE....for 8 hours her heart would race and her breathing would stop!!! The Doctors had to call poison control to find out how to treat her. POISON!!! Pure Poison!!! I'm hoping that this stuff will be banned in the US completely. The people who say this is completely in your head are morons themselves. I watched what it did. I watched my daughter lay there.......I watched my daughter almost die from this stuff. BEWARE!!!

this drug is not to be underestimated, i assumed this drug would be weak because it is legal. i have experience with almost every street drug, and purchased it with a friend who was once a meth addict. we had both been extremely big potheads in the past. this drug is STRONG. people saying "you're an idiot if you can't handle spice" are either idiots themselves, or have never tried/had strong spice. in my opinion the effects of this are more intense than most marijuana you can find, (i live in southern california, moved here from vancouver british columbia if you dont trust my judgment of pot strength) it makes you act stupid, laugh uncontrollably, walk like a drunk person. only difference is you're hyper aware of how retarded you are, and you remember every detail of this. .... ps, yes, it can give you the munchies, paranoia, etc. it's using the same receptors as THC so OF COURSE IT DOES!
