Letter: Rules turning area into a giant HOA
Another law? Prescott, please tell me it ain't so! I'm referring to the latest ridiculous proposal about implementing a "stricter" noise ordinance - brought to you by the folks who obviously need to get some new hobbies.

Editorial: Businesses play a big part in SB 1070 issue
How do businesses figure in the furor that has put Arizona in the spotlight since Gov. Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 in April and U.S. District Court Judge Sandra Bolton put its most controversial portions on hold?

Letter: LD1 story gave false impression of debate
The article in the July 15 paper headlined "Legislative candidates debate top issues in Prescott" was generally an informative piece covering some of the Clean Elections policies, but the article had a major flaw.

Editorial: Take measures to keep kids safe
Not a bush or tree or wood pile or potential trail has been spared in the search for young Sylar Newton, the 2-year-old who vanished from his family's campsite near Sedona this past Sunday.

Column: Spotlight on truth helps fight corruption
It was Jan. 22, 1997, when a North Carolina jury awarded Food Lion, a giant supermarket chain, $5.5 million in punitive damages as a result of a hidden camera investigation by ABC-TV into sanitation and meat-handling practices.

Please do not let the hard-working people of the Gulf make life-altering decisions based on the hungry, desperate need of just today.

Editorial: Ruling simply means taking the next step
Thursday was D-Day for Arizona's new anti-immigration law, and a U.S. District judge on Wednesday blocked controversial parts of it from taking effect.

Letter: School board is gouging taxpayers
Here we go again. The words "another school tax hike" are becoming more public. Some concerned citizens bravely went to the Chino Valley school board meeting on July 20. It was there that they expressed their opposing opinions to the proposed new education tax to be levied in the Chino Valley Unified School District.

Letter: Visitor enjoys Prescott's outdoors
I just wanted to say thank you to the City of Prescott (including surrounding areas), citizens and volunteers for focusing so much energy on its outdoor recreation, parks and trail system.

Letter: Follow the budget voting histories
Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democratic Party. They controlled the budget process for FY 2008 and FY 2009, as well as FY 2010 and FY 2011.

Column: Get kids out of cars and onto bikes
Time is perhaps the most encompassing word ever spoken or written. Many bikers, seeking their origins, feel they are timeless sons of human history. The wheel, the heartbeat of their adventure, was invented about 4000 B.C. in Mesopotamia - present-day Iraq. The wheel then journeyed to Egypt, Greece, Rome and the rest of civilization.

Letter: Ordinances all bark, no bite
Recently, the Courier published a letter complaining about barking dogs. Also published in the Courier that week was an article reporting a suspected poisoning of a barking dog. Both the letter and the article reflect a very relevant problem: barking dogs!

Surely, this must be the summer of our discontent.

How I enjoy reading the letters to the editor section of our Courier; however, it seems like each week brings a new whine.

Editorial: Released documents make us examine war
It's a reluctant analysis - when classified documents are released publicly. Such was the case Sunday when an online source for leaked information did just that - leaked some 92,000 reports spanning parts of two administrations from January 2004 to December 2009 on the war in Afghanistan.

Letter: Times have changed when it's about truth
In my generation truth in advertising was our concern. The airways were balanced and the press, independent and free to correct a competitor's misstatement. Today, it appears the truth does not matter. History not a decade old is rewritten.

Letter: Put the King of Forest in the State House
Congratulations to Fred Jensen of Crown King for his magnificent shot that killed the most beautiful elk I have ever seen, only to have this prize animal end up becoming a wall decoration that hangs in a Whiskey Row bar.

The elk isn't alive because he became an instant trophy as soon as Mr. Jensen saw him.

Column: Medicare Crisis, part 4; another viewpoint
As I read the Courier's three-part Medicare Crisis articles with interest, I was reminded of a human perceptual paradox: We all tend to interpret the same event differently.

The entire series seemed critical of Medicare and recent health care reform, yet avoided any of the positive changes. Predominantly focused on the loss of income to physicians and other service providers, the series seemed disappointingly indifferent to the many benefits for Medicare patients and the eventual help to millions of uninsured.

Editorial: Often your free time is best served for others
Retired folks in the Prescott-area community keep a lot of wheels turning.

Often, they are the backbone of nonprofit agencies and their churches because they volunteer hours of their time in outreach programs that benefit all of us one way or another.

Case in point: Gerda Samuels. She is 77 years old going on 30, judging by the energy she exudes. On her own, she founded "From Home With Love" five years ago because she wanted to touch the lives of America's military forces serving in Afghanistan. She goes beyond these borders, though, if she finds out about a lonely serviceman or woman deployed anywhere.

Letter: Don't trample on other peoples' rights
Regarding the July 12 editorial, but not necessarily the smoking debate: "Go back where you came from" is not only counterproductive, it's immature and more than a little mean-spirited. But to those of us who have spent most, or all, of our lives here, listening to a never-ending stream of newcomers telling us how to make OUR hometown more like THEIR hometowns (the ones they left to move here), the sentiment is entirely understandable.

Letter: YMCA program needs support
The YMCA gymnastics program provides a means for underprivileged children and "at risk" youth to participate in something positive in their lives that they normally couldn't afford. It gives them an alternative to release negative energy in a positive way. It teaches responsibility, self-discipline and good self-esteem.

Editorial: Weigh in on council meeting experiment
It's bad when you want to attend a council or board meeting and find out what you care about is the last item on the slate. It's worse when you learn the meeting is expected to last hours.

In April, the Prescott City Council, with Mayor Marlin Kuykendall leading the charge, implemented a 90-day test of reducing the number of council meetings from four to two per month.

Column: The numbers behind the noise problem
Prescott, as well as other communities, has been noise-impacted, as suggested by the recent meeting with the City Council about motorcycle noise. The current noise ordinance is a subjective one, making it more difficult to define vehicle noise violations. Fortunately, the police department has been authorized to purchase sound level meters, which will permit them to better address this problem.

Letter: Conservation Corps leader inspired many
It was refreshing to read the article regarding government stimulus funds going to such a worthwhile project as the Youth Conservation Corps. Because of the humble nature of Conservation Corps Crew Leader Fred Cone, the Courier journalist most likely didn't realize she had another worthy story within the reported one.

Letter: Column's omissions undermined stance
Randall Amster's column on June 22 was absolutely devoid of any logic. He states that SB 1070 is "racially motivated, legally untenable and morally problematic." I think his diatribe was un-American, unreasonable and divisive. Like every other leftist, if you disagree with Amster, your position is "racist" and/or immoral.

Editorial: New law a step in the right direction
For years, many Prescott residents have been repeating a simple statement with regard to the actions of the city. It surfaced a lot when the city took over the restaurant at Antelope Hills Golf Course a while back: "The city should not be competing with private businesses," they said loud and clear.

In response to E.L. Spott's letter of July 15: Have you even read SB 1070? I'm so sick and tired of people calling "us" racist because we are trying to clean up a mess that the federal government has created and that now has the gall to sue us over!

Editorial: In a crisis, help comes in a hurry
When one person picks up the ball and runs with it, others inevitably join in to keep it rolling.

Such is the case with support that has rallied for little 5-year-old Tallen Simpson of Skull Valley. He suffered serious injuries, including head trauma, when he was dragged by a horse on June 29 while visiting his father in Willcox.

Column: Technology, rules grow exponentially
The Friday Catchall:

• CIRCLING CHANGES - Whilst pondering the consternation over downtown noise, specifically from motorcycles, that the Prescott City Council studied this week, I had to marvel at how things have changed for all of us.

Most of us have seen the e-mail that's been making the rounds over the past 10 years: How as kids we ran with scissors; played all day in the sun - without sunscreen - and it was OK as long as we came home in time for dinner; rode our bikes without helmets, and made ramps to jump them from; and on and on. And we turned out fine.

Letter: Use caution when choosing a contractor
Thanks to The Daily Courier for printing such informative articles from the Yavapai County Contractors Association.

My husband and I have lived in rural Yavapai County for more than 60 years. In 2003, we decided to move to the town of Chino Valley. We loved the new home and the location. We did, however, have a problem we couldn't seem to resolve.

Letter: Our flag is the best tool to unite
I just read Editor Tim Wiederaenders' "catchall" column, "'Statement' is just disrespectful," and boy, how timely it was for me. Thank you, Tim, for publishing the facts of flag etiquette.

Every day on my way to work, I drive down Navajo in Prescott Valley and see an American flag flying emblazoned with the image of John Wayne as a cavalry officer. This is apparently also a "statement," similar in nature to the upside-down flag you wrote about in your column.

No end in sight for local water wars
The old man sat on a bench on the courthouse plaza, the monsoon's drizzle washing his weathered face. Perhaps on this frazzled day, he should be tanning his wrinkles with a bright sun playing its hot hand. Yet here he was, his features fixed on a darkening sky, as raindrops sprinkled his cheeks.

Letter: Federal suit against SB 1070 hypocritical
I support our state's attempt to control its illegal immigrant problems and thus reduce the crime associated with drug cartels, human smuggling and kidnapping. I believe that the Justice Department's lawsuit filed against Arizona's new, tough anti-immigrant law is purely political.
