Editorial: The right call at the right time
Kenton Jones
Kenton Jones

Gov. Jan Brewer made a good call Friday in appointing Prescott attorney Kenton Jones to fill the unexpired term of retired Yavapai County Superior Court Judge Howard Hinson.

First, Jones is a longtime Prescott resident, who has his undergraduate degree from Northern Arizona University (1984) and his law degree from the Arizona State University Law School in 1986.

He has been active in the community for many years with the Rotary Club of Prescott, chairman of the Yavapai County Republican Central Committee, the Yavapai Humane Society and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Yavapai County.

He has a strong institutional memory about the area and a sense of its heart and soul.

Secondly, he has experience, not only in running his own law firm that specializes in municipal law, but also from serving as a magistrate in Chino Valley and as town attorney for Jerome, Clarkdale, and Dewey-Humboldt. He has prosecuted, judged and defended.

Finally, he has really wanted to be a judge for a long time. He ran unsuccessfully for a Superior Court seat in 1998, and has put in his name for all the vacancies that have occurred since. People tend to excel at jobs that have been their goal for many years.

With crime and litigation both enjoying a boom these days, the new judge will have a heavy workload ahead.

I have known Kenton Jones for 4 decades now and trust his ability to fill this position. Yavapai County will be served very well. The Governor got it right.

So many assumptions! At least your comments are good for a laugh! Are you people kidding?? You have NO idea what you are talking about with regard to the appointment of Judge Jones, his character or the courts in general. Your comments show just how uneducated you are and how little you know. Very sad.

I have done some research and am amazed that Mr. Jones' background is municipal law but he was hired for a FAMILY LAW position. Does he understand the high emotional involvement of cases of this venue? People's rights and lives have been put on hold awaiting an appointment since Hinson resigned. This frustration will most likely take its toll on this Judge just in the first few months of backlogged hearings.

Ah, look at it this way, his rulings will just be more fodder to the Court of Appeals. Now there is something to think about . . .

A predictable appointment by Brewer. Jones is a lifelong, dedicated Republican operative. On the day of the 9/11 rally in Prescott, Republicans in GOP headquarters here were making tea party signs for the evening rally and, at the same time, discussing the fact that Jones was to be appointed. It apparently was known that far in advance. Was any research done into Jones' background beyond his long involvement in Republican politics? What about character issues? How many marriages and/or children? Not simply Humane Society and Big Brother involvements. Immediately after announcment of his appointment, Jones left on a GOP junket to Israel. Is this an unbiased judge?

Kenton Jones is what Yavapai County does NOT need in 2009. The fact that he could not be appointed countless times in years past is significant and not due to Gov. Napolitano; it was due to his arch-conservative and archaic positions on the law, that are far from the mainstream. Some with no forward vision, like the Editor, are thrilled with this appointment. The majority will be disappointed. This is a step backward for Yavapai County, but was totally predictable given our present governor.

Yep, he sure has put in for every Superior Court vacancy in the last decade or so. One hopes that he will be good, but he probably hasn't gotten the job before because he comes across as just another arrogant, blustery, narcissistic attorney who just wants to wear a black robe for his ego. Guess being persistent and the Republican party chairman go a really long way here.

Had Napalitano done the appointing and chose a loyal and "I do mean loyal" slobbering left eyed liberal to the bench the name could have been honkybrujo. Now wouldn't that send a shiver up your left leg.

I didn't know Kenton Jones is a teabagger but if Jan Brewer and Tom Steele are for him then he must be. Another Conservative Republican on the bench thats all we need.

Thank God this did not occur under Governor Napolatino.
