Letter: Time to crack down on society's leeches

EDITOR:What is happening to the people of America? It seems we are turning into an entitlement country. I don't have to watch any news slanted with "facts" from the left or the right. I can watch videos of people who are not only fine with getting free money and benefits, but they feel they deserve it, demand it and brag about it.

I realize this type of person has been around since the beginning of time. I've known and met many through my life. It just seems the percentage is growing like crazy. They have been called lazy or bums and we have given them sympathetic names like poor or underprivileged. I call them leeches, as they suck the life out of others.

Please know I am not talking about the disabled or those truly in need. I'm talking about those in "want." Those who demand to be taken care of because that is what they want.

It's too easy for many to work the system. We need better and more background checks before anyone gets support.

Society, parents, teachers and all citizens need to instill a desire to want to succeed and be a responsible member of society. We need to teach and show how good it feels to do it ourselves and be productive.

Nice try, your supposition that conservatives folks lie on forms, cheat on their taxes and collect unemployment illegally sheds a bright light on your character. Do you have any hard statistical facts to back up your allegation, or do you have first hand experience.

I find it funny when those who vote hardcore conservative and whine about freebies handed out by the government (mostly to minorities, of course) go ahead and lie on the forms to get their kids free and reduced lunches, cheat on their taxes, and pretend to apply for jobs while they collect unemployment. I've seen it all up close and personal - insurance fraud, falsified time cards, you name it.

Black, white, brown, liberal, conservative, religious, or atheist - there are people from all walks of life who lie and cheat and game the system for their own benefit.

Please, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Don't gut programs that people actually NEED because certain people take advantage.

Doe sthe website have the other video posted too.... Just to let folks know the video is the second part of a set of two videos. The first one was about conservative "red necks" in the south and how they vote agianst their own self interest - it shows the spectacular hypocrisy of so many. Such as the guy who is on welfare but hates the government and the handouts... but thinks he deserves it. Or the guy who says he is not racist and doen't hate Obama because he is black (but then says he hates him becasue he is a half breed). In fact, Maher asked that Pelosi make the second video of the blacks in NYC in order to show how their are idiots and leaches on both sides of the political spectrum (and to avoid being attcked for showing only one side). Betcha the conservative website does NOT have the first video posted! That would be typical... (Did YOU even know there was a first video about consevatives?)

Dear mr. windup toys, thank you for sharing.
I'll just take it for granted that your the guy that has all the right answers.
Too bad the world isn't looking to you for the right questions.
When we all meet in the end, do you really want to be that that guy standing all by himself?
Life isn't too short, life isn't too long, it's just life and life only.
We need better background checks?
What should "they" be looking for?

Youíre all slaves to your mechanical conditioning, taking yourselves quite seriously, with no idea whatís running your egocentric, meager lives. Youíve fallen ó and fallen hard ó for yet another false dichotomy. Youíre all the same: life is too short and you will all meet in the end.

Article comment by: Unemployment Insurance Is Wages

First a couple definitions from Webster.

Quibble: to evade the point of an argument by caviling about words.

Cavil: to raise trivial and frivolous objection.

Wages as defined for accounting principles: all cost associated with the employment of an employee.

I get an income an expense statement every month. Employee expense or wages are listed and include taxes, insurance, fringe benefits and medical. To say these expenses are not wages may be technically correct, but I educate my employees to the facts of their real compensation, not just what is reported on their W-2. Instead of $3000 a month they are really earning $4000. I pay there medical insurance and miscellaneous taxes to the government.

As an employer I am willing to pay the taxes associated with their employment. The taxes paid on my employees behalf are wages paid to the government. The reason the government taxes the employer and not the employee, is to keep the masses ignorant. If employees had to write a check to the government every month equal to forty or fifty percent of their wages the population would revolt.

Now if you still believe you are correct and the employee does not pay unemployment, then I would suggest you not attempt to run a business.

To Dear Dan, thank you for sharing. It sure sounds like you have been through a very difficult time and still are. I don't know your whole situation (I have my own also) and hope you can continue to get the benefits you need and deserve. You need them and it sounds like you get at least some. I have also gone through hoops to get where I am. That's why it amazes me sometimes how healthy people seem to get benefits so easily. Believe me I do not wish ill will on anybody. I only am critical of those who can do but do not. You are correct at my use of the word leech. Believe me I do not use it except in certain cases. My Mother in law was the most giving person I knew. She took care of her family and others. ..... Mom worked hard and could not keep up with all the bills but still fed and housed them......We saw she was wasting away under the pressure and tried to step in and help. We paid bills and made the people help clean or the ones who were sleeping in the back yard just eating her food move on. But it was still too much and they eventually sucked the life out of her. Leeches! ....So I agree that term is derogatory, but for me, is valid for a small group of people. Bless you for trying so hard and I wish you the best in the future.

You sound like a very thoughtful individual in part one and part two. I will note that you made an exception for the "disabled" and for the "truely" in need. Those are subjective terms in and of themselves, that we could debate throughout eternity. These terms require value judgements. Indeed entire law practices are dependent on arguing over the true meaning of these terms and exactly how to apply them.

I do not want to put my life story out here for debate and you already have a fall back position ie... your exceptions. Let me assure you that I did not plan to turn out this way. I planned to be a good Christian wife and mother. Now I am a displaced housewife, which was barely workable, untill I got sick. I wasted my youth helping others and raising my children. I hope my current circumstances are temporary.

I receive Medicaid benefits. It is very difficult to qualify for Medicaid if your children are grown. The verification process is exceedingly thorough. My medical expenses exceed my living expenses. If I were able to gain enough earning power to get reach above the poverty level, I would lose the health care benefits. Because I have a pre-existing condition....

I also receive nutrition assistance. Because I am a skilled homemaker, I am able to cover all of my dietary needs with the small amount that I receive and even to take a hot dish occasionally to an ailing neighbor or two. It would be okay with me if they cut my nutrition assistance 20%. I have mastered the Wallmart ad match.

The only exception that I take with you, is with your use of the word "leech" . It is dehumanizing.

Article comment by: To Employer Who Knows Everything

I never said I was an expert on unemployment insurance. I simply said that the employee does not pay that tax, the employer does. I pay all the same things you do for my employees and no, I do not consider it part of their compensation, it is simply the cost of doing business. It is not something they "earn". It is the law.

I have seen to many people take advantage of unemployment insurance and then say "I deserve it, I paid for it"

No, you didn't, your employer did.

And when one of those employees gets layed off and then commits fraud by continuing to collect unemployment even after they have another job, who do you think gets penalized? Them? No, you do. Did you know that? I doubt it. You the employer gets punished by your premium being raised by 6 times the amount it was UNTIL that employee pays back what he stole. Did he earn that too? If he payed the insurance then shouldn't he be the one getting penalized?

"Any cost associated with hiring and keeping an employee is consider compensation by an employer. "
Gee, I wonder what my employees would say to that? Obviously if that's the case, I am paying them way more than market demands. Maybe I should cut their paychecks by 25% and tell them that according to you, my cost of doing business is actually part of their compensation. I am sure that would go over big. I sincerely doubt you are an employer at all with that statement. If you were, you would know all this.

Uh, let me get this straight. You chide me for not using my real name, then you don't use any name at all.

Hmmm-m-mm...I sense a left wing Obamanaut. Which is to say hypocritical and hate filled.

Try this instead. Offer a perspective.

Since, you offer no rebuttal at all, but rave about how terrible I am...so let me make it worse. Here is an additional life points to save America:

~ If you are under 50 and 'retired' on a pension of any type, public or private (unless it is from your own funds) then you are a leech who expects working people to support you for more years than you supported yourself.

~ Benefits and Entitlements to able bodied people too lazy to work are actually Charity & Welfare for the lazy, nothing less.

~ If you are drawing any Charity or Welfare income at all you should not be allowed to vote.

~ Recipients of Charity & Welfare must go to a work hall and 'punch-in' daily, 40 hours a week, day or night, in order to receive Charity or Welfare payments from the government.

~ Welfare and Charity recipients should undergo monthly drug screenings.

~ An arrest or charge for any alcohol related incident should be grounds to stop all Charity & Welfare payments.

~ No more homelessness. If you are on the street you do not get to skulk around at night looking for whatever. Either jail or the shelter.

~ If you are an illegal immigrant you get absolutely no Charity or Welfare in any form EXCEPT emergency medical care...then you are deported within 7 days regardless.

~ If you are an illegal immigrant, have children who are US citizens, and get deported...you will take your kid(s) with you. No exceptions except for orphans.

If you want to save your country, that's how to do it.

Part 2
One of my favorite scripture about working is 2 Thes 3: partly verses 6-12. Pretty much says donít eat food unless you work for it. If you donít work, you donít eat and donít feed them. They will get hungry and go to work to get money and buy food. But if you keep giving them money they have no incentive. Remember, this does not include the disabled or those less fortunate.
Iíve seen in person, heard, and saw in videos for years how those who are healthy abuse the system are demanding to be taken care of. This recent video really took it to another level of absurdity. I understand there are only a handful abusing the system here. But multiply that by most Welfare offices in our great nation and there could be millions of people. If they worked, not only would they not drain the system, they would be putting into the system which would help immensely. This is a right wing website but the video is left wing. http://dailycaller.com/2012/03/18/a-pelosi-maher-go-to-nyc-welfare-office-to-show-plight-of-the-poor/

Part 1
I wanted to wait awhile to give people time to comment. I knew a certain percentage would disagree and am pleasantly surprised to see how much support I got. Thank you. Iím not a pro, just a regular Joe (Dan?) with a thought. Many seem to have missed paragraph 3 where I was clear to state I was not talking about the disabled or truly in need. I KNEW I should have lead with that! LOL I also used a poor choice of words with background check. Of course I did not mean one like for a security clearance. Workers could go to the residence on an application and verify the people filing, how many dependants, incomes, if they are looking for work, and many other steps to insure the person is in need. I should have also specified welfare. I never mentioned Social Security, Medicare, etc. Hey, I only have so much space to write. 
I hope to have covered some concerns. To Peace Nik, you go to the Bible, and make some valid points. God expects us to help the less unfortunate and I can easily state America is the most giving nation on the planet. Not just the government, the people also. I would like to add, among many places, Proverbs 26, especially around verses 12-16. The slothful (lazy) always seem to have excuses. Iíve seen it over and over. Here a lion in the road keeps them from going out, they canít even get food from the table to their mouth, or they are hinged to a bed only able to flop from side to side. He thinks he is so smart but does little to prove it or take advantage of it.

Article comment by: To So Called Unemployment Insurance Expert

I currently pay unemployment insurance, FICA, Medicare, workers comp and medical insurance for my employees. The amount paid is equal to roughly 25% of their compensation and they earned it, even if it does not show up as a deduction in their pay check. So donít tell me an employee did not pay unemployment insurance.

Any cost associated with hiring and keeping an employee is consider compensation by an employer. Without the employee the cost are not incurred. I balance the income and future income the employee will generate to the cost to maintain the employee. If government cost per employee continue to rise as a percentage of compensation paid, well you figure it out.

Nothing makes me more sick than a bunch of rich, arogent, old people (yes, I said old people), that want to create the idea that they are better because thay have tons of money. If you want a society that provides no social benefits go to mexico (crime, begging, shacks, and WONDERFUL healthcare). Our social programs that all these stick in the muds want to get rid of are part of what makes America great. NOT JUST CAPITALISM. Please wake up.

Their are a few people who are using, or should I say abusing the state and federally funded programs. The systems are not perfect, and that is why they have hot lines to report any witnessed abuse of services. Like the time I witnessed 3 minority women trying to locate a babysitter, because their state allocated funds had been applied to they accounts, and they wanted to go to the casino. Now, that's abuse! It doesn't matter what they looked like or what they wear, etc. They may have gotten that why before hard times hit them...it's none of your business. As for the ice cream, so what if it was a name brand, maybe it was a reward for the child benefit. Maybe the only birthday present the child would get. Who are you to judge them for the purchase of a half gallon of ice cream. You should be ashamed of your attitude towards those who are struggling in the hard times we face today. Oh, and I am not on any assistance of any kind, and I am not a bleeding heart....but, I have enough compassion to understand some are struggling after losing their jobs, etc. Your attitude really sucks!

Yes, a lame duck George Bush, in the last days of his presidency, foolishly signed TARP. Then your boy O. Hussein B. Soetero took this lead and ran the country off a cliff.

This factor, along with trying to import more illegals from Mexico, by offering amnesty, is why ex-president Bush is so reviled among conservatives. Although history -if there is any after the Obamanauts get done- will treat George II much better than is currently the common wisdom. If for no other reason taking a stand against the Jihadists...finally.

As to the rest of your rant, just a crock-o-supercilious (look it up) nonsense so typical of people on the losing end of an argument.

While big unions at one time had their place, like around Samuel Gompers 60th birthday, since that time they have predictably grown into nothing more than money machines for bloated union officials, organized crime, and the DNC...actually, they are all the same thing.

Right now the true burden of a typical UAW worker, employed in a GM/Chrysler plan is over $168 p/hr, which is necessary to pay the outrageous costs of UAW medical care and annuity/benefit payments to long ago retired workers.

What the country needs is 'work' accomplished by 'workers' and 'producers' and 'entrepreneurs' and 'employers' with a profit motive and solid work ethic.

What we don't need is another generational crop of victims and losers who feel someone else making a profit, somehow takes away from themselves.

Do you know why rich people (like me) are so annoyed and bemused by the ne'er-do-wells bellyaching daily about their failures and victimhood, while demanding to be given something from others?

It is simply because we know YOUR problem, and recognize OUR advantage. Simply stated the rich are most likely smarter, stronger, wiser, and confident than people like, well, yourself. I read all your posts here and thus have ample insights into your life, psyche, and perspectives. Frankly these same off canter views are shared by Occupy types, able bodied welfare recipients, and losers various of all stripe.

So here are some hints:

(WARNING: Spoiler Alert Ahead!)

~ If your great grandmother is only 38 years old and never married...you are likely headed for prison. Do something!!

~ If you have never paid into Social Security and are drawing income, you are a leech.

~ If you think the world owes you a living, because you think they are rich and owe things to others, you are wrong.

~ If you do not not have a solid faith in God, you will likely fail at reaching your full potential.

~ If you quit learning at an early age, you will never amount to much.

~ If you are addicted to bad habits (drugs/alcohol, sex, sloth, greed, jealousy etc) you will fail.

So, my friend, either do better or let it go. Trust me railing against the machine at an Occupy Rally will get you nowhere except to a dead end.

The editorial is very idealistic, and in prefect world might be accurate. In the real world, words like Socialism or entitlements are used describe incorrectly the enemies of corporate world. The water cannons and tear gas that is being used on the hard working individuals in Europe who riot for some hope of quality of life may seem far away, but are brought closer by the above type of editorial. Removing due process, is what the editorial is supporting, harassing those already destabilized. When you cannot feel safe in your home or society to be free from random judgment, destroys the hope of education and better life in this country.

Unemployment is NOT taken out of your paycheck. Only employers pay unemployment taxes to the state who, in turn, pays the benefits to qualified unemployed workers.

So many employees think that THEY pay it which simply is not true.
