Editorial: There's time to fix election issues
If we do not do elections well, we don't do anything well. That is a mantra we often state this time of year, and Yavapai County Elections Department can rest easy.

Talk of the Town: Child hunger is real, preventable
For most of us who grew up in this land of plenty, it is hard to imagine how it would feel to go to bed at night hungry and to not know if there would be any food tomorrow. How hard would it be to pay attention in school when you are hungry?

Column: Glimpse into someone else's reality
A close friend and I had a disagreement recently. No big deal, but it got me thinking about why we differed and why there is so much disagreement among folks of good will, not to mention those in public life who denounce and disparage those who differ with their political views at the drop of a sentence.

Letter: Flat tire brought out best in passersby
I was driving up to Flagstaff Sept. 7 when I got a flat tire just south of Road 2 South in Chino Valley, and I pulled into the convenience store there to change it.

Letter: People select, reject facts to support bias
Regarding Nigel Rey-nolds' letter attacking "fundamentalist" believers in a young age for the Earth, fundamentalism applies as well to believers in the Religion of Evolution. The argument is not about scientific evidence but rather the interpretation of the evidence and biases involved.

Column: ISIS is about brutality, not piety
Whither the Islamic State? That's a real double-edged question: Where is the group otherwise known as ISIS headed, and can the United States and other civilized nations make it shrivel up and die? The group is and has taken off like a bat out of hell, gobbling up territory and becoming a virtual murder machine.

Column: Charlie Sheen a saint next to football players
Charlie Sheen gave a thousand bucks to the Philly waiter who was stiffed by Eagles receiver LeSean McCoy. It's just what the NFL needed on top of wife-beating videos and sexual assault suits. You know your league's in trouble when Charlie Sheen is helping you clean up your image.

Letter: Obamacare lies are Hitler-esque
This past week I saw a documentary on the AHC (America Heroes Channel) that depicted Hitler's rise to power. The documentary pointed that his propaganda was full of lies to persuade the German people to follow him, and he also pitted groups against each other, in his case the Germans against the Jews.

Editorial: Tree a symbol of our perseverance
Tomorrow, the City of Prescott, all of us really, will receive an extraordinary gift in honor of the 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshot crew who died on June 30, 2013, while battling the Yarnell Hill wildfire: a sapling from the World Trade Center's "Survivor Tree."

Column: Prince Harry just can't win for trying
Prince Harry fell to fifth in line to the throne Monday when William and Kate said they're expecting. He's the comedian's favorite. Harry wears a Nazi uniform to a costume party and everyone gets mad, then he wears nothing to a Vegas party, and he gets in just as much trouble.

Letter: Film Festival is 'part of the community'
EDITOR:

Thank you Prescott and Yavapai County for your support of the 5th annual Prescott Film Festival. We broke attendance records and "the buzz" in the community was consistently positive. When Elisabeth Ruffner kindly shared her opinion with me that the film fest was "now a part of the community," well, it doesn't get much better than that.

Letter: Why not take care of our own first?
EDITOR:

I, and I am sure there are many more people out there that have the same question as I do. I would like to know why in this country we have so many young people who have to go hungry, can't get medical help and can't find work to feed their family, put clothes on their backs or get school supplies.
