Congratulations to the Yavapai County Planning and Zoning Commission. Occasionally, principle prevails.
The commission Wednesday upheld restrictions on the Old Stage Stop store at Williamson Valley and Outer Loop roads that allow only gas pumps and the store.
Back in 2005 when the commission and board of supervisors approved the zoning change allowing the store over the opposition of many nearby residents, the commission and board stipulated the site was to have a store and gasoline pumps only and the developer also was to provide a community meeting room.
In May neighbors got up in arms after a real estate office opened in the area of the store building they thought would be a meeting room.
The location did have a small meeting room in addition to the real estate office.
Dan Main, operator of the real estate agency, then applied to the commission for a zoning map amendment to legitimize the real estate office.
Setting up the real estate office was a brazen breach of faith with the people of the community, and it was even more brazen to ask the commission to OK it after the fact.
The commission did right where the developer didn't. That's refreshing.
