Letter: A compassionate God would forgive

EDITOR:

In reference to the letter from Holly Schrader on June 7, I'm of the opinion that Ms. Schrader doesn't understand God's will any better than most others.

In my view, God would be saddened and vastly disappointed to see our concept of a just, loving and compassionate God sacrificed on the altar of "the letter of the law," the interpretation of God's will advocated by her. This is not an academic argument. Those with terminal and agonizing conditions should have both the right and the opportunity to end their own lives. Such an act is far, far in the opposite direction from murder and would likely earn God's special blessing.

Let those who oppose such a view occupy the place of such a sufferer for a few weeks or months. Then ask themselves, "Is euthanasia really a sin?"

God demands in the commandments: Thoult Shalt NOT Kill. This means abortion, war, homicide and suicide, NO exceptions. Any doubts you'll have to ask God himself in prayer.

and provision made for that forgiveness through the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God's only Son.

So many pitiably mock the Bible, though they have not studied it from cover to cover. If they had, they would know that the gospel of Christ is "foolishness" to the world, yet wisdom to those of us who choose to embrace it. We know its truth, and recognize our own need for a Savior and Lord.

If you haven't met Him, you wouldn't understand, and Cliff's Notes and secondhand information don't count as genuine efforts to make His acquaintance. I, for one, would not hinge my eternal disposition on anything but the Word of God, read with an open heart and mind, while crying out to the Creator of the Universe. If He is indeed Who He says He is, He will respond to your request for forgiveness and accept you fully, joyfully receiving the reigns of your life and your spirit when you, His beloved child, place them in His capable hands. Because, yes, in this vast expanse of stunning creation, He knit YOU in your mother's womb, knows how many hairs are on your head and longs to gather you, yourself, under His wings. You can't imagine how much He loves and cares about you, the details of your life here on earth and where you spend eternity.

You really owe it to yourself to check into that.

All of you Bible wavers and "quoters" must step back a few paces and support your basic premise... That there is really a floating, supernatural, male deity. There must be a mote of evidence that this deity exists. Some legal or scientific evidence that would support your waving arms in the air quoting verse after verse about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin! All this foment, without one speck of evidence that any part of it is based in reality!

JAMES THOMSON,
You bring up a complicated situation. How do you bail when you're ready and not have the departure labeled "death by suicide", which you must be referring to as a "no pay" clause in any life insurance policy?

What are the criteria for declaring a death by prescription drug overdose accidental or intentional? Good question, and anyone facing the problem, as you are, probably needs to figure out.

If done right, legally it's probably possible to have a bullet in the forehead written up as a gun-cleaning accident, while a shot to the temple might not. Tricky stuff. Sincerely hope you can figure this one out, relieve yourself of intractable pain if you so decide, and still keep your loved ones from getting hosed. Gotta be some lawyer type that can figure this out.

(Nearly impossible to think of insurance companies without getting pissed off, and I don't think it should be like that. Perhaps if they weren't the puppet masters of our various legislatures it wouldn't.)

Article comment by: Lyle Sentiss God's will

God's will comes in many disguises and is sometimes -often- difficult or impossible to separate from our own desires and ego.

The bottom line here is that YOUR life does not belong to YOU, it first is used by the people who know you on earth, and second -mostly- is the property of God.

Lena...what a great letter.!! You and I think alike on this I can tell. If only more people would see this light.

Are you telling me the creator of this incredibly vast and incomprehensible universe, 14 billion light years across, has human emotions? And shows preference to a humanoid species on one tiny planet, in a galaxy with over 150 billion stars? In a universe with over 100 billion galaxies? Are you kidding me? This religion concept, especially the human deity bit, is far too unbelievable. The more we learn about our universe. The God concept is fabricated by humans in order to attempt to grasp " the unanswered question".

Pain you ask? Here's my pain. Age 25. 30 degrees below freezing. Snowmobile accident. Broken (spiral) femur bone. Two miles from the nearest highway. Nearly an hour before being rescued. Carried out on a board the whole way with no pain med's. After two weeks in traction femur bone re- breaks ~ needs resetting ~ heavier weights added to pin. Laid in traction for four months. Remember asking my physician: "They shoot horses don't they?"
Pain you ask? Here's my pain. Age 64. Degenerative arthritis ~ neck down. Knee cap half gone. Hip nearly gone. Walks, slowly, with cane.
Other aliments.
Refusing surgeries and medications.
Please, if your wish is not to prolong your life please wear dog tags showing allergies, medications and emphasizing DO NOT RESUSCITATE!

All life belongs in the hands of God.

I will not take my life ~ I will not prolong my life.
"To live is Christ ~ To die is gain."

Will God forgive taking a life even your own? Not unless you repent first.

"Thou shalt not murder.

We all experience suffering in different ways.
For me to suffer is an honor.

Having a terminal condition, this problem hits close to home. What is the real problem that I have found has nothing to do with religion. A person who avoids the months of suffering has probably caused his/her loved ones the benefit of any life insurance.

@ Andy. How about Leviticus 20:20 " And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. "
Why is it that we only follow the certain parts of the bible? Should we not take all things written in it as literally?
I understand that we are going to have to kill a lot of people, and I doubt we have nearly enough goats for the required sacrifices. But it's either that or we will have to learn to keep an open mind and take onto account when the bible was written and what the world was like at that time.
Not everything in the bible fits into this modern world. It just seems that it does sometimes when we find something in it that fits our purpose.

Euthanasia is suicide or murder, a decision to end a life. God, not mankind, is the Creator and Giver of all life, and He values it dearly. Like each teardrop, not a single fallen sparrow escapes His attention.

Have you ever considered that stopping a life He created -- by electing to die or agreeing someone else would be better off dead -- may, among many other things, "complicate" and prolong grief for at least some loved ones left behind?

I've seen apparent misery prior to death, and freedom from pain in a home-like setting before death. The difference? Hospice.

Hospice is a remarkable gift to those with terminal illnesses, and to their families. It's available to human beings, who, by the way, are not worn-out pets to be "put down" because of limited function, depression, pain, illness or, frankly, the inconvenience and strain of providing them with specialized, costly care.

That said, I do believe it is a person's right to choose whether or not to avail themselves of treatment for diseases from which they will not recover, such as certain lethal cancers. Subjecting oneself to surgery, radiation and chemo to possibly gain mere weeks of compromised life may not seem worth it to many, and that IS their decision.

But to choose to die by intentional means? No. That's up to the God of heaven and earth, Who is indeed full of mercy and compassion, yet infintely wiser than us all.

Sadly, God's will would be allowed if mankind didn't rush in with drugs and life extending measures. Allowing death to happen in God's time and not man's is not euthanaesia it is HIS will for quality of life. For instances if the heart slows to the point of death but man puts in a pace maker to keep it going is that God's will? NOT! Having watched what conventional medicine does to mankind for 20+ years as a medical office nurse and listening to patients say "Don't ever do it Lena!" when talking of certain treatments I can say God's will is seldom ever allowed to happen to those who see conventional doctors. Being 74 - 75 in a few days - in the last 19 years I have not seen a conventional doctor and am very healthy active and look years younger than I did when I allowed them to medicate me without getting true relief or healing, nor do I intend to see a conventional doctor again to extend my life beyond God's time but will allow God's time to be mine and there will be nothing for HIM to forgive! I take balanced minerals, herbs and seldom eat prepacked, processed foods I also have a Living Will with DNR in it, which is what you need to do if you do not wish to have those life extending, pain filled days. Jesus healed he does not find glory in our suffering, as so many claim!

Article comment by: Who are We to Decide?

Who are we to decide that the taking of our own lives is the best choice? We are not given a challenge that is more than we are designed to be able to bear, even when it seems impossible. My mother suffered greatly for 25 years, enduring over 15 surgeries, years of dialysis, extreme health emergencies requiring chartered ambulance flights and many hospitalizations, causing our small family to live on a very unstable emotional and financial edge for most of our young lives. My siblings and I missed many opportunities, because the money wasn't available, and saw any hope of inheritance evaporate before our eyes. Nonetheless, we would have gladly given it ALL up, if it would have kept our mother with us throughout our younger and older years. The short time we knew her was a blessing we still cling to in our memories. At the end, she chose to refuse care beyond pain meds, and we supported her decision. She fought the battle with her health because she selflessly loved her family, and believed in the sanctity of the life God gave her.

We need to remember this before we call 9-1-1 for assistance as we come to the end of our life. A Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) process must be used to avoid the legal problems of our public safety people and medical people who are fearful of legal ramifications. I understand some Indian tribes had an agreement for elders who were near death would go of by themselves to die. I believe in DNR as a way to keep the costly end of life bills from breaking Medicare.

Ahhhhh...no. I couldn't find any reference in the Bible as far as "God's special blessing" for those who choose to take their own life, regardless of whatever condition they may be in . I did find these few choice nuggets of God's info:

Deuteronomy 30:19 "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live"

Ecclesiastes 8:8 "No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit,
And no one has power in the day of death. "

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."

If the Lord chooses, I will suffer years of torment in His name. I only thank Him for not choosing that, as of yet.
