Letter: Democratic policies gateway to socialism

EDITOR:

Larry Wonderling's (Nov. 19) taunt that "the election is over" is uncalled for. Apparently, he ascribes to the totalitarian view that power ends free speech and supersedes truth. But Americans honor our Constitutional freedoms.

His "PoliSci 101" is revisionist. He tries to divide socialism from communism. They are as different as Pippins and Galas. The communist Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (1917-1991) proves this. His denial that Social Security is socialist is absurd. Roosevelt boasted of its "redistributive" effect and lamented that he could not fully socialize the U.S. with "free" government healthcare.

Wonderling slanders our military by calling them socialist without justification. Later, he ignores Jihadist murder of more than 3,000 American civilians and invasion of our oil suppliers, trying to make "unnecessary invasions" and imaginary "occupations" sound frivolous or greedy.

Wonderling misrepresents the gender-neutral "all men" which the Declaration affirms are "equal." He tries to make this a misogynist "flaw" rather than accept its universality.

Wonderling conceals Clinton's Equal Housing Act and Community Reinvestment Act, forcing banks to write loans to those unable to afford them. He hides the Dodd Frank Act of 2007, which forced his "greedy Wall Street rich" to trade those worthless loans and collapse our economy.

The "ugly flavor" is from trying to make the most successful and generous country in history sound greedy. Our government has always given more in humanitarian aid than any other. Saudi Arabia is second, with 25 percent. And Americans have always given more than their government in private donations. Progressives' waste and job-killing have reduced private donations by 50 percent over Obama's term. "Survival of the fittest" in business has always allowed prosperous individuals and charities to keep neighbors fed and warm. Socialist/Keynesian choosing of crony "winners and losers" has now failed here like everywhere else, and has no place in our Republic, Mr. Ph.D.

@Hooty. Obamacare. Not socialized medicine. It retains all, repeat all ,of the same players involved in medical care that were invoved before it was passed. Those are: private doctors and medical professionals, private hospitals and clinics, private healthcare insurers. There are no government doctors or government hospitals created by Obamacare. It is no more socialized that it was before. It is essentially the same plan that was proposed by the very conservative Heritage Foundation as an alternative to Hillarycare.
You point to Japan's system as superior. In Japan all must have health coverage, in other words, universal coverage Additionally medical fees are regulated by the government. The amount you pay for your health insurance in Japan is based on what your earnings are.
I assume that is the only program that you call socialism that you believe to be created by Obama and even it is not socialism.
As to your concern for the high cost of medcical care. The costs were high before Obamacare. If we indeed did have socialized medicine, where the need for healthcare insurance was eliminated with a single payer system, and we allowed the government to negotiate for lower prices or maybe have the government set the prices like they do n Japan, then we could lower healthcare costs.
As for your advice for me to just trust you. Maybe on a different subject, but not on this one.

@ (J.K.): I'll name a socialist program started by Obama: Obamacare. Under the ruse of requiring all to have health insurance, the real deal is that the government will pay for health insurance for millions, or pay for some of it. How they're gonna pay for that is pretty vague. Here's my guess: IT WILL JACK UP THE DEFICIT. The big benficiaries: the healthcare industry. Insurance companies, hospital companies, drug companies (docs probably not so much). Pretty soon healthcare will consume 25% of our GDP (it's 16% now). Japan's healthcare tramples ours, and it's like 9% of their GDP. Obamacare will be a freaking mess trust me. An expensive mess.

Regarding your blog entry:

"Mr. Allen, Great rebuttal to an inane and illogical letter by a Ph.D."

You know, Buzz, when you were just another right-wing ranter, maybe your little dig here at someone who has initials after their name would've been expected. But now that you are apparently the local voice of the conservatives, don't you think you should elevate the intelligence of your criticism a little? Leave the immature, schoolyard bully mentality to the Tom Steeles and James Madisons and try to come up with better insults than "yer smarter than me so you must be dumb". Maybe then people would take your columns a little more seriously.

Steven:
Lets see, black and white, Hummm, money in the bank vs. massive debt, promoting industry or regulating it into oblivion, rewarding the lazy or persecuting the productive? I'll leave the heavy thinking to those who like to complicate and think they have the mystery of life figured out........If only their brilliance did not affect me then we would both be happy.

"An American": "I prefer black and white, it's less complicated."

And I'm sure it doesn't bother you that it's pretty nearly always wrong.

Correction: I confused the document itself with the statement of principles of the think tank (Project for a New American Century). Some of Bush's cabinet members signed both. Bush, Cheney and others just signed the statement of principles on the website, and George's name seemed to disappear from that (if my 9 year old memories serve me well). About the report, I dunno, because 2003 was the last time I read it. The names probably haven't changed much. The bottom line is that Bush and cabinet were pushing multitheater and preemptive warfare plus regime change in Iraq during Clinton's reign via letters from PNAC, and that's the same foreign policy strategy that was adopted post 911. The letter writer doubts the notion that these wars were frivolous, but I would have to say they very much are.

Social security is a socialist program and Medicare has some aspects of socialism to it. They both predate Obama's administration though, although I doubt either predate your birth. Are you suggesting that we eliminate those 2 programs? If you are, you are going to be at odds with the vast majority of Americans.
Here is my challenge to you. How about listing the socialist programs begun by the sitting president.
It seems to me you like to use both the S. word and the C. word without knowing what they actually mean.
I'm guessing your silence will be deafening.

The Community Reinvestment Act was the single largest cause of the financial collapse. Ask anyone in banking or mortgages during that time. We were forced to loosen mortgage requirements in certain "Census Tract Areas", that means low income. The banks that did not cooperate were in danger of losing their charters. Obama, as a lawyer for ACORN sued several banks to relax their requirements, claiming that homeownership was a "right' of all Americans. Obama's big lie is that it is all Bushes fault, and he is just here to help.

@ Tom Von Deck: Wow, that's huge news. Bush and Cheney orchestrated 911 in order to get us into war in Iraq? That's real spy story stuff. I'll rush right over to newamericancentury.org and check it out!
Edit: Nice website Tom. You know what else I found there? OBAMA WAS BORN IN KENYA! His birth certificate from Hawaii is a fake. He'll be impeached next week.

Speaking of the Dodd Frank Act of 2007, which led to the banking crisis, Obama was a Senator then and voted for much of what caused our problems in the Bush administration. That is, when he didn't vote 'present'.

Also, in Obama's community activist days, he used his law degree to sue banks and force relaxed lending standards. You have to wonder if he again used the poor as a vehicle to help destroy our economy. He was working at it even back that far!!!

He and Michelle 'voluntarily' gave up their law licenses and sealed all those records as well.

So much for transparency.

911 is not a blank check to invade whoever the foreign policy establishment and president feel like invading. In fact, the Iraq war was planned before 911 and before Bush took office. Bush, Cheney, Libby, Bill Kristol, Jeb Bush, Paul Wolfowitz and others formed a think tank and wrote a report in the Summer of 2000. Later the signers of this report were removed and the credits were replaced with other names and the date of the report was changed. They later also changed the name of the author from Bill Kristol to someone else. It called for regime change in Iraq and Iran, multitheater warfare and many other things with no mention of terrorism. It was framed in terms of bringing the world into alignment with American interests. They described this acceleration of foreign policy as impossible "absent a cataclysmic and catastrophic event, like a new Pearl Harbor." The signers became the occupants of the white house a few years later, and somehow they got their new Pearl Harbor. I found out today that Bush and Cheney's names were wiped out of the report, and it was pretty angering. I don't know what else they changed, but you can read it at newamericancentury.org. Click "reports".

James Madison once again polishing the massive chip on his shoulder that he has against those who've chosen to seek a higher education. How many administrations have been as arrogant or stubborn as this present one? Can't think of any that hasn't compromised for the good of our country, until 2008. Uninformed voters who will also suffer for re-electing this administration by 2016.

To the "American"
There are more choices than you propose. Your problem is that for you, things need to be simple... you know, black and white. Unfortunately life is not like that and your choices are unrealistic.
