Letter: Keeping an eye on Hell's Angels

A flier from the Hell's Angels is circulating in our rural Chino Valley community. It is titled the "Chino Valley Shootout" and advertises a boxing event at a local bar. The flier states, "Put up or shut up - Local MC's (motorcycle clubs) encouraged to fight."

In a recent article in The Daily Courier about this event, a member of the Hell's Angels asked the public to avoid any preconceived ideas about the club. He went on to say, "We are no different than anyone else. We are putting this on for the kids in town."

I certainly don't think the Hell's Angels were too concerned about the kids in town, or any other community member, when the gang was involved in the August 2010 shootout and gun battle endangering lives in a Chino Valley neighborhood.

It is my understanding the Hell's Angels plan to leave the bar after the boxing event with over 100 bikers, drive down the street where the gun battle took place, then return to the bar.

Call this whatever you want, but it is well known the Hell's Angels routinely engage in violent criminal activity. I encourage you to read a factually based reference paper on the Hell's Angels that is available at the following U.S. Department of Justice website: https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/228801.pdf.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, along with law enforcement partners from around the area, will provide special patrols that day to enforce traffic and criminal violations while ensuring the safety of the public.

Sheriff Scott Mascher

Yavapai County

These are a Gang, not your casual, recreational Biker. They are not fit to conduct a youth boxing event. ... The Chino Chief of Police should be removed and replaced by a community leader who would oppose child abuse and uphold family values.

@ @Pablo No Nothing, building GANGSTERS up by being politically correct over professional only emboldens those that want to intimidate. When Cheif Wynn refers to folks like Scott and Toth as Sir and Mister, it only elevates and legitimizes their position in society. Removing the above titles would put Scott, Toth and members of both the H.A. and Vagos OUTLAW MOTORCYCLE GANG in the proper mind set that if they attempt to make the Town of Chino Valley their outdoor shooting range, they will be dealt with.
Sheriff Mascher's statements were clear and carried a stern tone unlike the weak statements of Chief Wynn. Maybe this is a case of STRONG Cop and WEAK Cop, I don't know. I do know that when dealing with GANGSTERS, if you show weakness, it will be acted upon.
I certainly hope that Chief Wynn's OMBUDSMAN mentality does not put the fine Officers of the CVPD in harms way. Chief Wynn has the opportunity to be the stand up guy and put this to an end, but does he have the ability to do so???

These "gangs" have been around since the 1950's and you have no clue that they are a criminal gang? Are you totally living in the Twilight Zone?

wow Sheriff, I guess the idea that citizens are presumed innocent escapes you. Here the event hasn't even happened and you are raising the alarm. Seeking a bit of easy PR? How sad for the county that your sheriff would espouse these views so openly. Sheriff do you and your deputies have all the crimes in that area all nice and solved? If not why are you wasting your time chatting to the paper with this Alarmist rhetoric?

Great response Sheriff Mascher! Unlike the lukewarm response of Chief
Wynn. There is still time for Doreen's to come to their senses and cancel this gang gathering. Is it really worth going out of business over???

Hey Pablo, why don't you give the Chino Valley Police Department a call and find out what they are doing about this. I did and I found out they are going to be prepared for this event. Instead of assuming nobody is doing anything, find out for yourself before you call people inept. You are the only one who ends up being inept.

von deck gives good examples of where the supposedly learned, educated among us can give the most simplistic, nonsensical comments of all. He yacks about how people are maligning all bikers, when that's not the case at all. One particular "club" is being discussed here and his rambling commentary is just an attempt to a.) sound smarter than he obviously is and b.) sound "cool" and "down" with the biker folks.

It's just funny how in reality, bikers, from whatever club or affiliation, have more respect for someone who just comes out and says "I don't like you" than they do for someone like von deck who is trying to glom on and be their buddy.

From what I am reading, it is the HA supporters who are insisting that all bikers are the same as the HA, thus anyone with a problem with HA must be against all bikers. Where are you reading the opposite?

Within the HA, your notion that it is merely a riders' club with a few bad apples rather than an organized crime syndicate is not supported by any evidence I am aware of. On the other hand, the notion that it is an organized crime syndicate that makes its money through drugs, prostitution, and extortion and stays in power through violence and intimidation is widely supported by the investigations of law enforcement agencies across the country. Do you have new evidence to present or a compelling reason to discount what exists?

Your reasoning is usually up to a higher standard.

" The general biker bashing on these pages is unfounded."

I suspect many folks form a negative opinion the minute their ears are assaulted by the illegal exhaust noise of almost all of them. This is clearly a sociopathic disregard for anyone else, and, as one would expect, engenders negative reactions.

One Saturday, I took a look at a number of the bikes parked on display outside the bars downtown. Only two or three had legal mufflers.

Their intentional disregard at the noise laws is matched only by that of the Prescott Police. They have chosen not to enforce the law, and we are left to put up with these throttle-jockeys and their loud exhausts.

BTW, I have ridden almost daily since forever, so I am not a biker hater.

Umm.....exactly what does the 2nd Amendment have to do with showing off their tattoos?

If you get a group of the same ideologues and borderline criminals anything together there is always a problem. Makes no difference if it is bikers, skateboarders, welfare recipients, Obamanauts, or Democrats there will likely be a lot of dangerous antics going on as a result.

This is taunt, plain and simple.

Everyone who rides is not a criminal, obviously. The people who are organizing this are. Nothing more than PR. These people are there to intimidate, harass and annoy citizens. They dont care about the children.......anyone with any common sense can see that. I am thankful that law enforcement will be watching them. I pay taxes expecting our elected leaders to DO SOMETHING about public safety issues like this. when you see anyone of these people with their cuts on look for the 1% patch. Then go to google and see what that means? Those are the people that you should keep your family away from. That is a walking billboard claiming to be nothing more that a dirty rotten thug.....

Again 1%ers make it clear that they are an outlaw gang. Think about your kid going to a gym to learn from this guy. They will learn a lot more than fighting. Let's keep them what they are: Hell's Angels. Hopefully, down the line, LE can learn how to deal with these people, before it comes down to regulators.

Good for you Sheriff Mascher, at least you are taking this threat to the safety of the people of Chino Valley serious. I wonder why Chief Wynn does not? I also wonder why the Mayor and Town Council of Chino Valley do not seem to think this is a serious issue? Mayor Marley, why is this function being allowed? Also, if Chief Wynn is so inept, why does he still have a job at CVPD?

"Shocked" is right. I minored in philosophy in college. The head of the department was a biker. Two Ph.D.'s, one in zoology and one in philosophy. He was also in a motorcycle club. He was by far the best teacher in the department. I've known plenty of other bikers, too. The general biker bashing on these pages is unfounded. If people want to be gangsters, they get what they deserve. However, it looks like an entire group of people is getting pigeonholed.

@ GITEM unit, no me and mine are not H.A. or any m.c. and that kind of Mccarthyism suspicion doesn’t help our community in any way.
@ Tony D, thanks for facts well stated, your educated response is refreshing.
@ at those making derogatory comments about motorcyclists in general, grow up and realize that there's all sorts of riders. from army/marine vets, realtors, bankers, grocery store workers...so try to widen your mind before saying that bikers need to be run out of town or constantly waiting for a shoot out. come on guys, living in a small towns in no excuse for small mindedness.

The Sheriff can waste tax dollars anyway he fancies, and write as many negative letters but in my opinion that ‘’eye he’ll be keeping on them’’ will be searching for anyway to harass them, thus making more tension and publicity. I personally have not ever been part an M.C. but surely they are not purely angelic but the easiest way to find power hungry criminals is to look at the ‘’authorities’’. this letter sure has riled up some poorly informed hate. don’t let the bias half truths of the media be your only education about what happens or you’ll be sorely deceived.

Perhaps those people in Anaheim who were shot with rubber bullets should have heeded the warnings to disperse. They had ample warnings and ample oportunity to leave. They only have themselves to blame. Lawlessness by the masses does not solve anything and cannot be tolerated.

Wow, all the arm chair quarterbacks are out in force on this one. The incident in CV between the Vagos and Hell's Angel's was started by a member of the Vagos, working for law enforcement as an informer. The Vagos were never charged, only the Hell's Angel's, that is part of why the charges were dropped. Read the past articles, you might be enlightened. As for the Hell's Angel's being a crime syndicate, there are various clubs that have done things to get LE's attention, but there are a lot of the HA members that are upstanding individuals in the various cities and towns in this country. You would also probably be astounded/shocked or whatever to find that there are some higher level management in corporations that are HA members. I have worked with and become friends with a lot of HA members while I worked in various government agencies, they are also the biggest contributors to the "Toys for Tots" run by the U.S. Marines. I have also met Sonny and talked with him, is actually a very intelligent individual. So unless you have been in touch personally with HA members, don't make such broad assumptions, you may never know if you are actually talking with a HA member or not. Not all of the members are bad, as for the Vagos, they are actually the "gang" that you don't want around, they are more vicious that the Hell's Angel's have ever been. BTW Rev, Sonny is a very interesting individual right?

Article comment by: Tony D,

I think Sheriff Mascher should take a look at the YouTube video of Anaheim police firing rubber bullets and loosing one of their vicious dogs at children and then get back to us about whom we should trust around our kids. And anyone who thinks to take comfort in the knowledge that he and his men will be "keeping an eye" on the bikers should also know that all the charges in the so-called "shootout" were dropped when it was learned that the whole thing was instigated by a police informant.
