Editorial: What will it take to enact gun control?
The Daily Courier

Today, we cannot wrap our minds around what happened Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were executed by a 20-year-old killer.

While bullets reverberated through the school building, youngsters cowered in corners and closets. Frightened, crying children were told by police to close their eyes as they led them from the building. Panicked parents raced to the school to look for their children. Children and their parents described teachers locking doors and ordering their students to huddle or hide.

Unbelievable. Unimaginable. Unthinkable. Unfathomable. Gut-wrenching.

Americans search for answers in the wake of this heart-breaking tragedy.

In this country, there has never been a serious or credible push to ever ban all guns. That is patently insane. What is equally insane is the ease with which mentally unstable citizens can obtain guns and ammo for deadly purposes; law-abiding, responsible gun owners notwithstanding.

What is happening in our country - the Tucson shootings, the Aurora, Colo., shootings, the Portland shootings, the Virginia Tech shootings, Friday in a Connecticut elementary school - is an epidemic.

We all respect the Second Amendment. Hands off our guns, it says. The entire amendment contains a couple dozen words yet clearly expresses words that never get talked about, words that are stuck in the fine print of gun lobbyists everywhere: "A well-regulated militia ..."

We all know what militia represents. Citizen soldiers, defined in the dictionary as "a body of citizens." We are all agreed on that one.

Let's get to "well-regulated."

Supporters of the Second Amendment must adhere to all of its tenets and respect each of its patriotic covenants.

"Well-regulated" means that we, as Americans - both our forefathers and our current moms and dads alike - agree to a reality, the reality that we must restrict gun and ammo accessibility. If, that is, we truly respect the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment, by its explicit language, compels all Americans of all times and centuries to regulate American citizens keeping and bearing arms. All Second Amendment supporters agree.

Gun industry leaders hire a bevy of lobbyists to spin the amendment away from any hint of itself for fear it will cut into sales. They will spin their side into "small-business-getting-squeezed-by-big-government." Or, "it-goes-against-the-patriotic-right-of-the-people-to-bear-arms." Circular story lines designed to keep our attention away from our founding fathers' wishes to regulate guns.

Let's talk about regulating who, what and why and draw up the paperwork in Congress.

Any Second Amendment supporters who say it is un-American to restrict anyone from getting guns and ammo are the ones not respecting the Second Amendment.

Our founding fathers would abhor that a gun killed 20 children in Connecticut on Friday.

And, they would tell us that failing to cross the divide over gun rights in this country is most definitely un-American.

What's it going to take? Why, a dictator, of course!

The 2nd amendment is in our Constitution for the "people" to be able to defend themselves against GOVERNMENT.
The Redcoats were in Lexington to confiscate weapons and arrest rebels. The framers of the Constitution placed the 2nd amendment into the Constitution primarily to allow citizens NOT to defend themselves or their country from a foreign invading power, rather to defend our liberties from GOVERNMENT. It seems the 2nd amendment is more necessary now than ever before.

Ask Eric Holder were all the guns went. Still waiting to hear the truth.

Please remind us all of the last time 26 people were killed in short order using any of the methods you described.

If you can't focus on the problem at hand, we'll never make any progress.

Gunnery Sergeant: Has the New York ban specifically been to the Supreme Court? You can make all the asumptions you wish about what might happen if it does, but how about not calling me a liar for stating the truth? Is that really to much to ask even on the opinion page?

If you're going to insist on gun control as the solution to this problem, please include bat control, knife control, fist control, car control, drug control, brick control, hammer control, golf club control, rope control laws, ad infinitium. Guns don't kill people...people kill people.

For those of you delusional enough to think your gun protects you from a tyrannical government, do you really think your peashooter is a match for predator drones, laser guided missiles, helicopter gunships, special forces teams, etc., etc., etc??

Your thinking is incredibly naive, at best, and downright foolish in reality. Find some other reason to justify your guns that one just ain't cuttin' it.

By the way, the year 1812 called and they want you back...

"Draw the line where ever you like..."

Okay, since you say its my choice I say you're allowed to have a muzzle loader and no more, just like the authors' of the 2nd Amendment had in mind when they envisioned "arms."

Let's see some nutjob try go on a mass killing spree with that weapon. (By the way, don't waste your time posting links. Do you really think I'm going to view something just because you post it? Please.)

What will it take to enact gun control? ANSWER: The abolishment of the Constitution of the United States of America and all of the God given freedoms that it protects.

BW - Your link does NOT back up your assertion. Not an example of " have and will stop a tyrannical take over ..." in that it never happened. More an example, like your mindset, of wishful thinking.

@ M Douglas

I am a combat veteran, and rest assured, I will NOT be asking you or anyone else for help.

As I have said, the National Firearms Act of 1934 limits your access to the types of weapons that would protect you from a tyrannical government, yet, we still live in a free state. So don't be fooled for a second that your semi-auto with a large capacity mag has been making the difference.

@ Veritas Vincit - Just so truth prevails (as your name implies), the 20 Chinese school kids were wounded, not killed. "BEIJING (AP) A man wielding a knife wounded 22 children and one adult outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes..." (http://www.nytimes.com)

So why can't I have a fully automatic machine gun or rocket propelled grenade launcher if the 2nd Amendment says I have the right to bear arms?

In some states, you can legally purchase marijuana AND a semi-automatic firearm. No foolin'.

Article comment by: Gun Control Must Be Good.

Gun control must be good if the Chinese DEMAND that we outlaw guns. Does that mean that they will stop selling rifle scopes, gun cases, pistol holsters, etc to Walmart?

Even Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that wonderful leader of Iran says that we need more gun control.

Visualize me rolling my eyes.

@ Geez Louise

It helps if you get your facts straight.

1. The National Firearms Act of 1934 has been reviewed by the Supreme Court...UPHELD

2. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB), or Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act of 1994 (which is what the NY is very similar to) was reviewed by the Supreme Court...UPHELD

And for those that keep saying that other objects are used as weapons more often as guns (I call it the Baseball Bat Myth), you should check this out: http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/baseballbats.asp

Misplaced: Only because that particular specific issue has not yet been to the Supreme Court. See for a preview DC v. Heller, and MacDonald v. Chicago. Cities, Counties and States pass unconstiutional laws all the time. They stay in place until ruled on by the Courts. It's how the system works. They are getting knocked down all the time. First up was Washington DC and Chicago. Eventually, others will be addressed.

The Second Amendment is not about hunting or the right to protect yourself, it is about responding to government tyranny.

TO: Geez Louise

You missed my point...by a long shot. Therein lies part of the problem.

But since you brought it up, if New York can restrict the sale of semi-auto weapons as you claim, why can't they be restricted nationwide? Is it OK to ignore the 2nd Amendment in New York??

Article comment by: Geez Louise

Misplaced Priorities: Actually, you can't buy one in NY. Let me repeat for emphasis, no knowledge at all is really dangerous. You should quit while you are behind.

Gunny: I'm not sure the use by a few gangsters constitutes "common use" in the same way some 10,000,000 being used by hunters, target shooters, ranchers and so on across the USA does, but we can certainly agree to disagree.

Part 2
Most of the post's herein are simply blame-shifting to whatever boogieman the prejudice beliefs are of the writer. The fact of the matter is politicians and the special interest groups of "H [B]ollywood" want firearms restrictions so they only have access to all of these weapons. We did watch both the N.R.A.s and the Actors for a plan [mis-representation of plan as gun control and not Hollywood movies, video games, dys-functional parenting, Chicago example]] instead of the monster's society creates with total abandon.
The answer is totally clear to us which is, "Pay attention while in "Jeff Coopers" yellow at least all of the time, carry the power you need equal and surpass the bad guy's, to stop the fight when and where it erupts [as every one of us will be the victim of a violent crime at least once in our lives' according to F.B.I.Stats] and simply accept responsibility for the choices we make to protect ourselves and ours! Don't screw with my rifles as the bad guys have as much if not more. I am not a victim if I choose this route as I pretended to be when I didn't know any better and relied upon other's for my safety!
