Riders pull even; PHS runners sweep

The Yavapai College volleyball team got back to conference play on Wednesday night and got its record in the ACCAC back to .500.

The Lady 'Riders beat South Mountain 30-26, 30-18, 30-19 in Prescott to move to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Ashlee Rowe and Brittney Strumer had 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Brittnee Eiler had 31 assists and Stacia Wolff had 13 digs while Nicole Wanninger had 10 along with three aces.

Yavapai is off for a week before traveling to Eastern Arizona Sept. 19.

The Badger boys placed five runners in the top 10 to easily take the title in 106-degree heat Wednesday in the Valley.

Ben Schild crossed the line in first place with a time of 18:13. Troy Schilperoort ran second (18:25), Alec Kozak was sixth overall (19:47), Jack Rusing finished seventh (19:57) and Carey Allen was ninth (20:13).

The girls packed the finish line with five runners among the top 10.

Anna McCabe ran second with a time of 25:20. Emily Dunbar was third (25:38), Morgin Slade finished fourth (26:03), Alison Fraher was eighth overall (27:09) and Nicole Mangelsdorf was 10th (27:14).

Both teams get a break from meets until the Mingus Invitational on Sept. 29.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

The Lady Cougars got two goals apiece from Karissa Stueven and Danielle Van Buren to run away with this rout Wednesday at Verde Valley.

Kate Earle also added a goal.

Chino takes the field again at Payson this Saturday. Kickoff is at noon.

Chino Valley's Angel Ayala turned around a flat first half from the Cougars with three second-half goals to put this one way out of reach Wednesday in Verde Valley.

Ayala's hat-trick snapped a scoreless tie at halftime.

In three conference games the Cougars' defense, led by Juan Aquiar, Josh Ebert and David Sexton, has allowed only one goal.

Next up for the Cougars is hosting the Chino Cup this Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats lost Tuesday in their last non-conference tune-up before the real 1A West grind begins.

Mayer started strongly with a 25-11 win in the opener against their cross-town rival. But three ineligible players left head coach Kathi Schuchardt with only one sub and Orme took control, winning the next three straight 25-12, 25-13, 25-12.

Seven of Mayer's next eight games are in 1A West play starting Thursday at Surrey Garden.

Kohl Balsiger paced the Bears in this Tuesday meet up in Flagstaff with a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle and a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke. Jake Balsiger took third in both the 200 free and 100 free.

Erika Heinbaugh swam to two second-place finishes, in the 200 free and 50 free. Erin Johnson placed third in the 500 free. Kendra Smith swam to two third-place finishes, in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.
