Roughrider soccer team battles to preseason tie
The Daily Courier

The Yavapai College soccer team got plenty of time to work new schemes in its preseason opener Thursday night in Southern California. Two overtime sessions' worth, in fact.

The Roughriders met their usual preseason exhibition opponent, the Mounties of Mt. San Antonio College, in Walnut, Calif., and battled to a 2-2 tie. Both teams were scoreless after two 20-minute extra sessions.

The Mounties, the three-time defending California Community College Athletic Association champions, brought a 39-match winning streak into the contest, and were up 1-0 by halftime.

In its first and only preseason game, Yavapai battled back. Second-half goals from Kyle Morris and Alex Harlley, both freshman attackers, knotted the match at 2-2 to force overtime.

The Roughriders, ranked No. 5 on the NJCAA's preseason poll, get ready to open the regular season with an ACCAC match next Thursday night in Scottsdale.

YC hosts Phoenix in its 2012 home opener two nights later on Aug. 25 in Prescott Valley.
