Before last fall, Hannah Madler had never competed in an organized race against cyclists her own age.

The new Arizona High School Cycling League (AHSCL) provided her that opportunity.

One unbeaten Division 6 team was going home with a loss Friday night. It sure wasn't the defending state champions.

The Bagdad Sultans, in their 2014 home opener, crushed the Mayer Wildcats 58-6 in an all-Yavapai County matchup in 8-man ball.

CHICAGO - Diana Taurasi and Candice Dupree scored 24 points each and the Phoenix Mercury, playing without star center Brittney Griner, beat the Chicago Sky 87-82 Friday night to complete a three-game sweep of the WNBA Finals for their third championship.

Bradshaw volleyball wins 3 straight at Chino Valley
Bradshaw Mountain High's spikers swept Chino Valley, 25-14, 25-14, 25-22, in an area clash Thursday night at the Cougars' main gym.

For the Bears, Annie Clifford served 13 points with three service aces and five digs. Joelle Bobinsky had a phenomenal evening, tallying 20 assists and seven kills while serving 12 points with three aces. Dylan Arnest added five solo blocks.

Prescott junior Lauren Mazzella remained undefeated in her varsity badminton singles career, improving her regular-season record to 19-0 dating to last season while leading the Badgers to their fourth consecutive shutout victory Thursday at home.

Loss evens Prescott volleyball mark at 2-2
The Lady Badgers' record dipped to 2-2 after this loss in five close games, 25-27, 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 7-15, at Flagstaff High Thursday night.

Raphael Temple led Prescott with an astounding 19 kills and 14 assists. Erinn Marroquin (16 assists, service ace), Grace Hendricks (21 digs), Sydney Koehler (eight kills, 13 digs) and Veronica Norkus (six blocks, six digs, six kills) also had solid performances for the visitors.

PHS Hall: Badger baseball's 2002 state title team inducted
The 2002 Prescott High baseball team accomplished a feat that no other Badgers' club had done on the diamond before or has since - win a state championship.

Under the direction of wily coach Kent Winslow and his collaborative assistant, Ted Blake, the Badgers captured a Class 4A title in dramatic fashion that spring.

1st loss for Prescott volleyball team
The Badgers suffered their first loss of the 2014 season Tuesday at the PHS Dome in three games, 23-25, 24-26, 9-25, versus Liberty.

Bailey Anderson paced Prescott with three kills, two blocks and two assists, while Grace Hendricks tallied 16 digs.

Bradshaw boys, girls swimmers win at Kingman
Bradshaw Mountain's swim team competed at a four-way meet in Kingman Monday and won on both the girls' and boys' sides.

The Bradshaw girls were victorious with 197 points, followed by Kingman Academy (90), Kingman High (80) and MALC (19).

Trinity Christian volleyball improves to 5-0
The Trinity Christian Lady Warriors traveled to face the Anthem Eagles and won by scores of 25-15, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-11.

Emily Roth led with seven aces, while Caroline DeCarlo contributed 12 kills and 13 digs. AnnieLaurie Anton led in assists with 23, and Anna DeCarlo added 32 attacks. The Warriors are 5-0 on the season.

Tri-City soccer splits doubleheader
The Tri-City Panthers played their first home Canyon Athletic Association game against Canyon View Tuesday, and won one game of a doubleheader. The Panthers also lost 5-2 to Phoenix Collegiate Academy.

Jacob Kobold and Megan Welborn scored the two goals.

The Panthers are now 2-1.

A 5-0-0 start to the season has elevated the Yavapai College men's soccer team up a rung in the national poll this week.

The latest poll, released by the NJCAA on Tuesday as the first of the regular season, has the Roughriders at No. 2 in the nation, up from the No. 3 the seven-time national champions earned in the preseason poll.

The Bears grabbed a promising 1-0 lead on Red Rock before the Scorpions bounced back to win the next three sets Tuesday night in Prescott Valley.

In the 25-19, 14-25, 19-25, 15-25 loss for Bradshaw Mountain, Taylor Lamb led the hosts with six kills, 13 digs and three service aces (13 points).

Millennium ran away from the field Tuesday at Prescott Country Club in Dewey, winning the Bears' home four-way by 10 strokes.

An individual golfer from Ironwood, however, was the day's medalist. Chris Stevens had the low score with a 1-under par 35.

3 straight perfect shutouts for Prescott badminton team
On Monday in Peoria, the Lady Badgers shut out their third straight opponent to open the 2014 season.

Prescott coach Carolyn Peters said that all of her varsity players won their matches against Liberty in two sets. With two of her regular players unable to attend, Peters inserted four freshmen into the lineup and they didn't skip a beat.

Fencing tournament draws international competitors to Prescott
A tournament record 124 fencers competed at Prescott High School in the Prescott Fall Classic fencing tournament over Labor Day weekend. Participants included fencers from Russia, Serbia, and Puerto Rico, as well as six states: Maryland, Minnesota, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.

Chino Valley girls' soccer runner-up at Show Low tournament
Chino Valley High's girls' soccer team made waves at the Show Low tournament this weekend, finishing second place behind champion Snowflake.

The Cougars lost to Snowflake, 7-1, in the finals on Saturday but notched three impressive victories, including ones over Holbrook, 10-0; Payson, 3-1; and Show Low, 1-0, in a shootout.

Embry-Riddle volleyball coach Jill Blasczyk has experienced both extremes in her first two seasons. The former All-American at the University of Arizona knows what it takes to be successful. Rather than focusing entirely on immediate results, she has been "patient with the process."
