As we grow older habits form; remember that change is OK

Tamee Niekamp

As we grow older habits form and it is important to remember that change is OK.

When we raise our children we make decisions for them regarding school, discipline and scheduling, just to name a few. I remember when my child was little and we were going through a food war with each other. I would make something, she wouldn't eat it unless it was mac and cheese. I thought she would starve if I didn't make it for her. I gave in.

Even as a parent we are constantly challenged and are learning along the way. I then realized, she will not starve and making two separate meals was not going to go on forever. I had to change my way of thinking and develop a plan on how I was going to handle this smart 2-year-old. I had her help me with little things in the kitchen and soon she was eating more colorful and healthier food choices.

This is the same with discipline. I had the perfect idea about what I was going to handle this situation too, until I actually had to. At that point I realized change was OK, and I needed to adapt the way I thought would be productive for my child. Other ideas and strategies can have a more successful outcome at times.

It is important once you find something that works for you and your family stick with it. Always remember though that some things may change as your children get older. Adapting your ideas and plans as a parent is part of a learning and growing experience. What once may have "worked" for our parents does not mean it will work for you and your family.

I know after I had my child I had set ways I was going to raise my child. Little did I know my plan would not go that way. You need to realize as a parent that it is okay to change some rules so they apply to your family needs- sometimes you learn as you go........
