VIDEO: Elks Fire Curtain unfurled
City officials and consultants were on hand Tuesday morning for the unsealing of the original 1905 Elks Opera House fire curtain. Because the curtain consists of hazardous asbestos, it has been sealed away in the old armory (Grace Sparkes Activity Center) for about the past five years.

As a part of the on-going restoration of the historic downtown theater, workers unrolled the curtain this week to allow for duplication of the intricate artwork for the theater's new grand drape.

Video: Black Canyon Trail Dedication
Bob Cothern, on behalf of the Black Canyon Trail Coalition, on Jan. 8, led a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Black Canyon Trailhead to dedicate the 49 miles of non-motorized trail that volunteers, Bureau of Land Management employees and professional trail crews have built so far. The BLM dedicated $432,000 of stimulus money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to the Black Canyon Trail Coalition. The money enables the trail coalition to hire hand crews and mechanized crews to finish building the remaining 35 miles of the trail, which starts at Carefree Highway in the south and ends about eight miles northeast of Mayer. Video: : Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary Birds of Prey
The Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary in Prescott is home to a variety of rescued animals and birds that can not longer live in the wild. Most of the birds of prey at the sanctuary found a permanent home after rehabilitation by Arizona Game and Fish. Several of the birds are currently on display. Zoo officials are currently building a new raptor house that when finished will display additional birds of prey.

Video: The Senator Highway Sign is back!
The Senator Drive-In sign made a return engagement in Prescott Friday morning after going offline more than a year ago. A crew tore it down in mid-October 2008 after someone complained about it. Stephen Rogers and Jane Orr were instrumental in restoring and returning the sign to the side of the road.

VIDEO: Trains run through PV Civic Center
Larry Davis of the Prescott Valley N-Trak club, his wife, Mary Beth and other model train enthusiasts set up a model train layout on the first floor

of the Prescott Valley Civic Center. The model trains, which are 1/160th of the size of real trains, go around a track that includes man-made and natural features throughout the country, including Mount Rushmore and rivers. The train layout will be on display at the Civic Center through Friday evening.

VIDEO: Solar Power = Savings
Jerry Bengtson decided to take advantage of Arizona Public Service's renewable energy rebates and state and federal tax incentives, and install a solar electric power system at his Prescott home. According to Arizona Solar Power officials, based in Dewey, Bengston will notice an immediate savings on his electric bill, and should average a monthly bill of about $8 from here on out.

Video: Lowe's wall repair work underway
Repair work has been under way since about July on the wall that began failing in December 2007 at the Lowe's store on Highway 69. Construction crews currently are building up a "soil buttress" berm to replace the old masonry retaining wall. Meanwhile, residents in the nearby Prescott Canyon Estates neighborhood continue to deal with the noise, dust, and traffic disruption from the project.

Video: Alder Grove Sculpture at the Highlands Center
Five Prescott College students in Julie Comnick's "Public Art: Site Specific Sculpture" class created an alder grove sculpture at the Highlands Center for Natural History pavilion, 1375 S. Walker Rd., Prescott. The students created the canopied sculpture from downed alder trees they carried from Lynx Creek to the meadow. They hauled tree limbs and stumps as tall as four-feet about one-half mile from the creek to Walnut Grove. The grove is about a one-quarter mile walk from the Highlands Center pavilion. Students attached stumps and limbs and branches using wooden dowels and shaving branches to double as dowels as well as part of the sculpture. The sculpture will be in the meadow until Nov. 6.

Arizona Public Service crews are about 30 percent finished with tree clearing at The Mountain Club. Crews are cutting a 10-foot swath around high voltage power lines in order to prevent trees and branches from contacting power lines and igniting a fire or causing a power outage. APS expects to be finished with the project in about two-and-a-half months.

Video: Over the Hill gang
The Over the Hill Gang, a group of local volunteers, spends every Monday morning laboring over new trails in the Prescott area. Made up mostly of retirees, the group includes George and Karen Sheats, Jan VanLeeuwen, Bill Brown, Bob Sutton, Duane Hacklander, Doug Buck, Otis Bartholemew, Ed Fuller, and John Bauer. They regularly move the boulders, cut the brush, and groom the new trail-bed to set the course for new hiking and biking routes in the area. This past week, about a half-dozen of the Over the Hill members were at work on a new section of trail near Prescott's Watson Lake.

Frederick Sommer is a world-famous black and white photographer that moved to Prescott in 1935. He created all of his masterpieces in and around Prescott until his death in 1999. He was a photography teacher at Prescott College, and the Prescott College Art Gallery, in conjunction with the Sommer Foundation, is playing host to a rare display of his work including his paintings, collages and music scores. The show opens at the Sam Hill Warehouse gallery Aug. 28 and closes Sept. 25.

This past week, Phoenix Children's Hospital bussed 115 children to Friendly Pines Camp at Prescott for Camp Rainbow. The campers call themselves Rainbow Kids and they are all cancer survivors. Prescottonian Ken Hinderleiter, 94, treated the Rainbow Kids to a pizza party, and they treated him to singing and dancing. Rainbow Camp is like any other summer camp for children - they ride horses, canoe, make arts and crafts, clean their own cabins, climb trees and have fun.

The 11th Annual Tsunami on the Square wowed a huge crowd June 20 at Prescott's downtown square. A parade, skitmercials, dancers, music and Navajo dancers entertained the crowds into the evening. The theme as always was a celebration of water and earth. Tsunami founder Jay Ruby explains the history of the festival's name: The likelihood of all these incredible, cutting edge, performing artists converging in Prescott is about as likely as a tsunami crashing down onto the downtown square.

Video: Girl Scouts plant flowers at courthouse
Five Junior-level Girl Scouts from Troop 479 planted annual flowers around the base of the Yavapai County Service Flag memorial garden on Monday. The girls did the project as part of a community service for the Prescott community. The girls did their own digging and planting and made friends with a bunch of earthworms that they dug up. They hope the flowers will bloom each spring as a reminder of the girls' good spirit.

Video: Yavapai County Search Dog Unit finds human bones
Yavapai County Sheriff's Response Team officials recently invited The Daily Courier along as its Search Dog Unit prowled an area near Thumb Butte, sniffing out human skeletal remains after a hiker's dog discovered a human skull in the same area on April 10. Most of the bones of the unknown man have already been found so detectives weren't expecting much. But during this search, the team found eight more bones including a collarbone and a large vertebra.

The busy Four-Points intersection in Prescott was the site for a safety assessment Thursday afternoon, when the Prescott Alternative Transportation organization brought together a group of traffic experts. Because of the high traffic count at the corner, as well as its high-profile location next to Miller Valley Elementary School and Yavapai Regional Medical Center, the intersection was a logical choice for the assessment, the experts said.
