Dream looks to come true this summer
The Daily Courier
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mingus Mountain Post 10227 has existed since the mid-1970s but has never had a lodge to call home, Cmdr. Chuck Abraham said.
VFW post members have met at the Elks Lodge for a few years and previously at a church, he said.
Abraham, a Navy veteran, said the post, which has about 130 members, has never owned its own lodge because its members lacked the money to obtain a site and build on it.
However, the donation of 2 acres from the Fain family as well as donations from area businesses will make the goal of a home of its own a reality by mid-summer, Abraham said.
He added the deed transfer from the Fain property of land at 5th Street immediately south of the Moose lodge took place Nov. 2.
"We have been working on this for 30 years," he said, adding his son, Charles Jr., will be the general contractor for the 3,000-square-foot building and is expected to begin construction in February.
Post members will apply to the Community Development Department for excavation and grading permits within the next few weeks - "as soon as we get a nod on the annexation (request)," Abraham said.
The lodge seeks to annex the land to the Town of Prescott Valley to obtain municipal services such as water and sewer service, he said.
The annexation request is scheduled for a public hearing at a meeting of the Town Council Thursday evening. Town staff began the annexation process Nov. 5 by filing a blank petition with the Yavapai County Recorder's Office, prompting a 30-day waiting period.
The VFW also applied to the Planning and Zoning Commission, an advisory body to the council, for a zoning change map from single-family residential to residential and services with a planned area development. The commission is scheduled to consider the request Dec. 14.
The site will require substantial grading, according to a staff report to the commission.
