Free wood available to low-income families
Special to the Courier

Project Stay Warm supplies free wood to low-income families who heat their homes with firewood.

This collaboration between United Way of Yavapai County, APS and the American Red Cross helped hundreds of individuals last year and the hope is to meet the need again this year.

Distribution dates this year are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 5 and 12 at the American Red Cross office, 1020 Sandretto Drive, Prescott.

APS crews cut and deliver the wood to the American Red Cross for distribution. "This is a unique and rewarding way we to give back to the community, especially for those who need it most during our cold winters," said Jeff Spohn, forestry director for APS.

United Way of Yavapai County coordinates the distribution of the wood and recruits and manages the volunteers.

"This is a great partnership that impacts the community in a significant way," said Michael Whiting, executive director for United Way. "This is a true community collaboration, identifying a need and responding to it."

Eligibility requirements are:

• Must reside in Yavapai County

• Hold a Quest card (state services identification)

• Income of less than $1,200 per month for individuals, $1,800 per month for families

• Have a safe wood-burning stove or fireplace

• Qualified through DES or other agencies

Wood is distributed by appointment only. Appointments must be made in advance. To sign up as a volunteer or to schedule wood pickup, call 443-5321.
