Every other Wednesday evening, a group of like-minded people gathers in the Elsea Room at the Prescott Public Library to play board games.

The "gamers" are part of the Prescott Area Boardgamers, a loosely formed group of adults who like to play European-style board games.

Gamer Paul Lewis said the Euro-style games are "more intelligent, more strategic and more challenging that just rolling a dice."

The number of people playing on "game night" varies from week to week. At times, enough people are present to set up two games. If only a small group shows up, the gamers may play only one game-that could last for two or more hours.

Some of the gamers are "refugees from 'I'm Game' in Chino Valley," said Mitch Ramsey.

The game store was a popular gathering place on Wednesdays and Friday evenings where gamers would meet and play. Until it closed, going to "I'm Game" on Friday night was a staple activity for local gamers.

Lindy Downs found the Prescott Area Gamers online. She said the group is for "people who want to commit more than two hours playing a game."

With board game themes like future space, acquisition, current affairs, economics, the Stone Age, and World War II, gamer Eric Larson, "This is a fun way to exercise your mind. These games help with critical thinking and planning things out."

Puerto Rico is one of the most popular games. It involves money management, resource gathering and logistics.

The group plays games such as Ticket to Ride, Railroad Tycoon, Le Havre, Race for the Galaxy, Agricola, and Stone Age. The games vary depending on who shows up and which games they bring. Game table sizes range from two to seven players.

Larson likes the social aspect of gaming. He said it brings together "thinking people. It is better than computer games."

Ramsey agrees. "I like the socializing and getting out of the house. You are talking to people instead of typing to people," he said.

The Prescott Area Boardgamers are "always looking for more people to play," the group said. They estimate the area has hundreds of gamers.

Gamer Bob Harder said the group is open to anyone from young adults to seniors.

The gamers meet from 5 p.m. until the library closes, which is about 8:30 p.m. It is easy to get started. Harder said people can just show up.

"Bring your favorite game and introduce it to the group," Harder said.

The Prescott Area Boardgamers typically meet every other Wednesday. The group met Sept. 8, so the next meeting would be Sept. 22.
