Granite Mountain student has winning entry
for County Fair Book Cover Contest

Granite Mountain Middle School eighth-grader Jordan Shipp reaped $50 for his winning entry in the Yavapai County Fair Premium Book Cover Contest.
Shipp's artwork features a pig dreaming about this year's fair theme, "Harvest of Fun," and a variety of activities.
Shipp is the first student from Granite Mountain Middle School to win the contest.
The young artist said the idea for the cover came from a picture he saw in his classroom.
"I saw the pig and just added things," he said. "It took me about 15 minutes to draw it."
Though he loves to draw, Shipp said he is focusing on basketball and would like to become a professional basketball player.
Entering the contest was a class assignment.
Shipp said he does not draw as much as he has in the past, and when he does, he "mostly doodles."
As first-place winner, Shipp received $50 from the Yavapai County Fair. He and the other students who entered the contest also received a pass to the fair. The runners-up in each age category received a ribbon. Their artwork will appear in the back of the premium book.
Yavapai County Fair Book Editor and Cover Contest Coordinator Vanessa Martin said the contest is "open to every K-12 student in the county. This year we received 165 entries from nine schools. The number of entries depends on which teachers want to participate."
Martin received entries from Accelerated Learning Center (Cottonwood), Brown Home School, Glassford Hill Middle School, Granite Mountain Middle School, L.O.V.E. Home School, Mingus Springs Charter School, Prescott High School, Prescott Valley Charter School and Taylor Hicks Elementary School.
Martin said Shipp's art teacher, Jalynn Bacon-Dorow, received $100.
Martin has coordinated the contest since 2002.
"We received a lot of nice entries this year. We are looking for an entry with bright colors, good contrast and one that represents the theme of the fair," Martin said.
She said the number of entries was down this year. "We usually receive between 500 and 600 entries. There are a lot of talented kids in this county," she said.
The runners-up included:
First runner-up, Gabby Sullivan, 7th grade, Granite Mountain Middle School; second runner-up, K.T. Fisher, 12th grade, Prescott High School; third runner-up, Ashley Brown, 7th grade, home school; fourth runner-up, Emma Dahl, 7th grade, GMMS; fifth runner-up, Dempsey Wilken, 5th grade, Taylor Hicks Elementary School; and sixth runner-up, Ballie Gorman, 4th grade, Taylor Hicks.
Students earning an honorable mention included:
K-2, first honorable mention, Grace Jordan, 2nd grade, AZ Virtual Academy, and K-2 second honorable mention, Hannah Brown, 2nd grade, home school; 3-5 first honorable mention, Quin Thompson, 4th grade, Accelerated Learning Center, and 3-5 second honorable mention, Makennah Mills, 3rd grade, Taylor Hicks; 6-8 first honorable mention, Kendra Sweeney, 7th grade, GMMS, and 6-8 second honorable mention, Bethani Sidebottom, 7th grade, GMMS; and 9-12 first honorable mention, K.C. Brown, 11th grade, Brown Home School, and 9-12 second honorable mention, Kourtney Wagner, 11th grade, Prescott Valley Charter School.

What an outstanding article -- and on the front page to boot! Jordan is an incredibly talented young man and deserves the recognition. The money for the art teacher, Mrs. Bacon-Dorow, is written to the art department of Granite Mtn. Middle School and is going to be used for art suppplies next year. Congratulations, everyone!
