Rolling stop leads to human smuggling arrest

PRESCOTT - A traffic stop resulted in an arrest for human smuggling when an officer found eight illegal aliens in an SUV on July 19, a police report said.

Carlos Lopez Perez, 30, was driving a small, white SUV on Prescott Lakes Parkway when he made a right turn on red onto Highway 69 without stopping, the report said.

Perez got out, closed the car door, and walked up to the officer, the report said, and he gave the officer a Mexico driver's license with the name "Carlos Singuantay Perez."

He said he and some friends had come here from California to look for work and now they were headed back to Los Angeles, the report said. The officer asked him about the front-seat passenger, a girl who appeared to be a teen, he said, and Perez said she was a friend's daughter.

"Perez seemed to be nervous when I questioned him about the female, as he was stuttering and looking around," the officer wrote, and when he shined his flashlight into the car, he saw four adults "lying very low" in the back seat.

Perez could only haltingly name them, stuttering and pausing, the report said.

The officer found four more adults in the back cargo area of the SUV.

A Spanish-speaking officer arrived and said Perez was "providing inconsistent statements" about where he was going, where he'd come from and who the people were.

One of the passengers told police she had come into the U.S. illegally the day before and that Perez was taking her to California to meet the rest of her family, the report said.

The officer contacted ICE, and an agent spoke to each of the eight, then told the officer that they had all admitted to being in the country illegally, the report said. Each was taken to the Camp Verde jail on an immigration hold.

Perez, who was identified as Carlos Lopez Perez, "Singuantay" being a false name, was charged with eight counts of human smuggling and one count of identity theft and booked into the jail on a $50,000 bond and an immigration hold as well.

We need a president with balls that will work at each state level to adapt an illegal immigration policy that works for each and every state.
Rather than file a lawsuit against a state for protecting its people from invasion and violence.

I fought for our nations freedom in war.
I did not fight for our country to allow illegal activity from outsiders to take place on my soil.
I am tired of the breakdown of patriotism because we have a president that does little to stop illegal immigration.
I am also tired of people worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture whom is here illegally.
We will experience a surge in patriotism in America, when we can be proud of America and its customs again, when we instill "the brave" back into the home of the free and the brave.

This was great, but there are many others that get pulled over with out a valid license, no valid id, no valid insurance and they let them go. I have to pay restitution to an illegal, that played victim to the county attoney and sure enough won. it makes me sick, she is illegal lives from the goverment, has outstanding tickets and laughs at me because she knows how to play the system.

Mr. Bob Roberts:
obama has allowed illegal immigration.
He filed a lawsuit with our state to try to stop all aspects of SB1070. But, was not even fully successful at that!
All the implementing of stopping and deporting immigrants has been at the state level.
The federal government has sat of their behinds scratching for the last 4 years, doing very little to protect America.
It's time we stand up for America, rather than defend the failures of this "president" and Washington D.C policies.
I am proud of our state rising up against the corruption of this president and the nation's capitol!
Forget about political affiliation, and join the cause to heal America.
Fight what is wrong!
Vote for what is right!

I wish the officer would have let them continue on to California. Now we are picking up the tab to put them up at the Verde Hilton, we will pay to prosecute them, we will pay for a bus ride back to the border, and then they will turn right around and go straight back towards California anyhow. So what. We lost that battle a long time ago.

Look it up--more illegals have been deported under Obama than Bush. Sorry it doesn't fit the GOP's agenda, but it's true.

As I understand it, the "ICE Obama Law" prevents deportation for low level offenses. This is not a low level offense. Or...am I missing something? Is this more hatred being voiced or something I didn't read in any updated legislation?

And no, @ Great Job, I have never received a citation for speeding by the cameras in PV or anywhere else. Haven't had a moving violation in over 20 years.

So, my comment isn't as you assumed. I see rip-offs and I know what real police work does.

Send them all to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!
He should actually see what these people look like. He pushes them off on the hardworking taxpayers who foot the bill for these interlopers. They're not here to work. They know there's no jobs. They want the benefits promised to them on Spanish-language television by the Obama administration.

I just read that the mayor of Baltimore has put out the word that she wants 10,000 illegals to come to her city. Flagrant disregard of the law. That city is committing suicide.

Article comment by: Great Example of why SB 1070 was not needed, instead, political pandering in nature

Well, some politicians and lawyers have profited from SB 1070 ( at the taxpayers' expense), so they might claim it's needed.

What are you, a politician, a panderer, or a lawyer?

Don't worry illegals, you will be in California shortly, ICE via Obama has your back side. Sorry for the minor interruption to your journey. You will be greeted with food stamps, medical care and a false voter ID. Don't worry about finding work, you won't need to work to make a decent living in this country. All you need to do is "claim" (no proof required) you graduated high school in the US and you are in. Me Casa es su casa. Enjoy.

@Jenny:
SB1070 was enacted at the state level.
The feds have done virtually nothing to protect America from illegal immigration.
obama sued Arizona over our SB1070, wasting all our tax money.
obama wants illegal immigrant here, to gather needed votes for his re-election.
Immigration officials have the right under law to request the immigrants papers. Of course, they have none, so they will be brought back to Mexico.

Great Job: you have an excellent grasp of the proper role of law enforcement in a community and how traffic cameras are simply revenue generators and do nothing to enhance the safety and security of a community.

Individuals without a modicum of common sense are somehow inable to grasp this seemingly simple concept.

And as to question of whether or not the individuals will be deported back to Mexico it depends.

Since it wasn't an MCSO deputy that made the arrest, perhaps the Obama Justice Department can actually do their job.

However, if the arresting officer was white, then that casts doubt on the entire traffic stop, per those in power in Washington...

Article comment by: Another reason we need SB1070

Had Perez done his homework he would have known:
1) There are no jobs in Prescott
2) We are one of the toughest states for illegal immigration.
3) If you are here illegally, obey our traffic laws.
4) California will welcome illegal immigrants with open arms.

Great job Prescott PD! This goes to show that the presence of real officers, enforcing traffic laws, gets real crime off the streets. Unlike PV, where they just take photos of these people and send them a bill in the mail. Oh yeah, and fleecing local citizens.

So with the new act Obama enacted, will ICE take custody of them or will they have to be released?
