Program challenges people to become more active
The Daily Courier

People are encouraged to participate in a free program starting this September that challenges them to become more physically active.

The Arizona Take Charge Challenge is a 12-week physical activity program that motivates individuals to become more active in their daily life, said Leslie Horton, spokeswoman for Yavapai County Community Health Services. It runs Sept. 12 through Dec. 4.

To take on the challenge, people must form a team of 10 or more, elect a team captain to communicate updates, and report back to the ATCC coordinator on goals, Horton said. Log sheets will be provided for each person to record their daily physical activity and minutes.

If all members of the team meet or exceed their ATCC goals at the end of the program, the team will be put into a drawing for a grand prize, Horton said.

There also will be an individual prize drawing for every person who meets or exceeds his or her goal, Horton said.

Last year, 30 teams signed up for the challenge, Horton said.

"In previous years, participants have made significant lifestyle changes, increased their everyday activity, lost weight, and made new friends and walking buddies," said Carla Hover, physical activity program coordinator for Yavapai County Community Health Services. "We look forward to involving some new teams this year and including more people in the fun."

It is not necessary for your team to work out together, but some teams may choose to go on group walks, hikes, or bike rides. Each member of the team will set their own individual goals, and levels of physical fitness will vary for everyone, Horton said.

For example, gardening might be considered physical activity for one person while running might be another person's physical activity, Horton said.
