Students from the law school at Arizona State University are scheduled to board the Justice Bus March 20 to provide free legal advice and services in Prescott Valley.
Mary Juetten, a student at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, said the group is collaborating with Phoenix and Prescott Community Legal Services. About 25 students will board the bus, while practicing attorneys will take separate vehicles, Juetten said.
They will provide help in preparing income tax returns and conduct seminars on consumer protection and applying for unemployment benefits, she said.
The students and practicing attorneys plan to set up shop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 20 at Northern Arizona University/Yavapai, 7351 E. Civic Circle.
They will accept appointments for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance for low-income taxpayers through 2 p.m. Taxpayers can make appointments by sending an e-mail to justicebus@asu.edu or by calling (480) 965-4450.
The program for the day will consist of seminars on consumer protection and unemployment insurance at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The seminars on consumer protection will cover matters that include scams, foreclosure prevention and landlord/tenant law. Volunteers will be available to answer questions before and after the seminar and will also provide brochures.
The seminars on unemployment insurance will include how to apply for benefits and the appeals process.
People who seek representation from the Civil Justice Clinic in representing them in appeals may send an e-mail to justicebus@asu.edu, or call (480) 965-4450.
The foregoing contact information also applies to Wills for Heroes, a service the students and attorneys will provide to first responders.
ASU will provide the services through the support of the Shoumaker family, the Law Student Division of the American Bar Association and other partners, according to Juetten.
"We would like to be able to serve as many people we can," Juetten said.
