Rooster crossing I-17 delays traffic
The Daily Courier

DPS officials said Friday that motorists leaving Phoenix and Tucson for northern Arizona recreation areas found unusually heavy traffic on all roads heading north.

Officials urged motorists to plan on heavy traffic and greatly increased traffic times.

On Friday at around 11 a.m., traffic backed up on northbound Interstate 17 in part because a rooster was trying to cross the northbound lanes of I-17 near Carefree Highway. DPS units were finally able to conduct a traffic break and retrieve the rooster, officials said in a press release.

Officials said the rooster was not hurt; however, traffic backed up from the Carefree Highway to the north stack or junction of State Route 101.

Traffic on State Route 87 north into the Payson area also was heavy Friday with one collision just outside of Payson.

DPS recommends motorists carry plenty of water, some food and a first aid kit.

Anyone who has a flat tire or mechanical problem should pull off the road as far as possible.

DPS will try to help motorists, but with a greater volume of calls on a holiday weekend, it may take a long time to respond, officials said.

DPS officers do not carry gas cans or extra fuel, nor do they carry tools for roadside repairs.

In addition, DPS will be out in force looking for impaired drivers this weekend, the press release said.

DPS officials said people can visit www.az511.com and www.nws.noaa.gov for the latest updates on road and weather conditions.
