The Daily Courier

If you saw an unidentified bright object high in the sky Thursday night, you were not alone.

The oval-shaped object in the western sky apparently was a weather balloon, according to a staffer on duty in the tower at the Prescott Airport. He added that sightings were reported from as far away as Albuquerque, N.M.

He said the balloon was at an altitude of 110,000 feet and appeared bright because the sun was still shining after 8 p.m. at that elevation.

The balloon caught the attention of night watchers in the tri-city area. The Prescott Valley Police Department reported receiving several calls from people inquiring about what they saw.

Weather balloon? Why when we have satellite Imaging that it more advanced and more accurate? Isn't that like using a sundial to tell the time? I don't know what it was but I doubt we would use such a low tech device for that. Now a research balloon makes sense yes. but again why the old tech? why conflicting reports? I think there is a truth to it but why the vagueness. what are they looking for?

It was visible all afternoon too. Could be seen with the naked eye, and a set of binoculars confirmed it was a balloon. Though I was thinking it was at no more than 10k feet (because it was so visible). 110,000 feet!! Wow!

Article comment by: Not a weather balloon.

That was a heavy lifting balloon, probably not a weather balloon. It was way above "weather"! Weather balloons travel up to about 40,000 feet. The balloon was probably a high altitude research balloon.

Kudos Jenny Williams! What type of film (if not digital) and lens did you use for that shot?

Don't believe the government lies! I looked at through my telescope. It was clearly of Alien origin. I observed it rotating and ballons don't rotate. I am disapointed in the area citizens who so easily swallow the government lies when the evidence is right in front of them.

I have been told by reliable sources this is a camera balloon sent up by Homeland Security to keep close tabs on radical right wing factions. We already know what the weather is going to be like months in advance.

I owe a sincere apology to Iris for not believing her that it was a weather balloon. I thought she was messing with me.

Thank you to the first poster for the great links. So that's what something at 110,000 feet (!) looks like - awesome!

I was out riding my bike and my first thought was that it was a balloon or a planet for some reason visible, nice to know what it was! (Although I doubt I would bother the police about what's floating in the sky; they should have tried NASA, ha!)

Walked out around 8p to water the dog and saw it immediately. My wife told me to run and get the binocs and we figured it out after a couple of minutes. Thanks to the Courier for reporting.
