Letter: New generation giving back to community

EDITOR:

As a longtime volunteer with People Who Care, I have seen first-hand the difference this organization is making in our community. People Who Care is a not-for-profit organization working with individuals in Prescott and Chino Valley who are no longer able to drive or easily leave their homes. Our goal, as well as that of our sister organization in Prescott Valley, Neighbor to Neighbor, is to help our neighbors continue to live independently and let them know that there are many in our community who truly care about them.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting and working with the new Americorps VISTA member, Stacy Raker, who is serving with People Who Care and Neighbor to Neighbor. Thanks to a Critical Needs grant from the United Way of Yavapai County and the Yavapai Community Foundation, Stacy is working with both organizations to increase the volunteer base as the need for transportation continues to grow. Our volunteer contact with our neighbors helps to reduce the poverty of isolation as well as meeting a critical need for transportation.

It is refreshing to see a younger generation that is actively engaged in our community with an older generation and enthusiastic about making a difference. The ideas and energy that VISTA has brought to these organizations gives me hope for the future and for both People Who Care and Neighbor to Neighbor. Their work is invaluable and, with many hands, can be built upon within these communities.

If you're interested in volunteering with People Who Care (445-2480) or Neighbor to Neighbor (775-6145), please give them a call. If you would like more information about the AmeriCorps VISTA program, contact the Yavapai County VISTA Project at 848-7868.

Mary Mareck

Vice-President, People Who Care Board of Directors

I think it's sad that with all the negative comments that people leave on so many other letters, that no one had the time to say...that's awesome, Ms. Mareck! I, too, have noticed an increase in young adults and children taking an interest in their community and other areas. It isn't just in our area...it's everywhere! And, it's people like you that show your appreciation that will encourage them to do more! Thank you!
