"I was so shocked when I learned I was receiving Prescott Area Leadership's 2009 Woman of the Year Award," said Diane R. DeLong, director of North Star Youth Partnership at Catholic Charities.

She said, "This award represents teamwork. I can't do what I do by myself, only with the teamwork of many."

DeLong and her daughter, Brynn, who was PAL's 2003 Female Teen of the Year, are the first mother and daughter duo to win PAL's top awards.

She also received an Exceptional Service Award from Catholic Charities in 2006 for her outstanding efforts, leadership and contributions to advance CC's mission.

A native of Preston, Iowa, DeLong holds a bachelor of science degree in journalism and mass communications from Iowa State University and completed the Non-Profit Management Institute certificate from Arizona State University and Yavapai College.

DeLong said they moved to Prescott in 1987, when her husband, Bob, got a job here.

During the past 12 years, she has served on several boards and committees for Yavapai Big Brothers/Big Sisters and PAL. In fact, in 1990, she was one of the founding members of PAL.

In 1997, when she joined Catholic Charities, the North Star program used to be TAPP (the teenage pregnancy prevention program), which provides health education, parent workshops and a variety of youth development activities.

She co-founded Prescott's Teen Maze, now in its 10th year, and Girls & Sports Day, 8 years old in May.

DeLong has served on the Arizona Department of Education's HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) review panel; three years as northern Arizona's coordinator for the AZ Coalition on Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting's grant project in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control.

She also is co-author of "Build It and They Will Come," a guide to help communities plan and implement a Teen Maze/Fair.
