Editorial: McCain is ready to lead country

Read any of the many business textbooks that have come out on leadership, and they all say clearly that leadership must rest first on integrity.

For that reason, first and foremost, The Daily Courier recommends a vote for John McCain for President.

McCain has said throughout the campaign that he wants to change the self-dealing, good ol' boy culture in Washington and especially in Congress.

The fact he has pledged to veto all legislation containing earmarks and to shine the light of publicity on the congressmen and senators wasting public money to buy votes can be one of the best things that's happened to our country.

Secondly, he has the demonstrated resolve to keep our country safe. He understands that we are at war with an ingenious, intractably patient and infinitely evil enemy who will not relent in trying to wipe us off the planet. He will maintain our security and fight the enemy.

Third, he also understands the urgency of making America energy self-sufficient as soon as humanly possible. He is open to every domestic energy option, including nuclear, to get us to where we depend on no foreign power to heat our homes and fuel our cars.

Fourth, he has the demonstrated experience and ability to work with both parties to restore stability to our nation's economy.

The next president will have a few other things on his plate. Illegal immigration hasn't gone away. Nor has the housing slump, environmental issues or education problems or protecting the country from wildfire.

It takes a distance runner with the kind of inner strength that got John McCain through a stay at the Hanoi Hilton.

Folks will show up. Not me! I'm fed up with McCain's war games. My dad and an uncle were WWII POWs. Dad fought in Korea, too. I lost a husband years after he fought in Vietnam to the injuries he suffered there. My husband of the last many years is a Vietnam era vet, and we've got friends' names engraved on the "Wall." A younger career military brother fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. Now, a nephew has fought in Iraq. I could go on and on.... As far as I'm concerned, McCain has bled his "POW-war hero" card to death. He claims to know vets' needs and how to take care of them, but his voting record doesn't show that! And, now this horrible campaign! Whatever heroism McCain showed in Vietnam pales in comparison to the man he's become. Arizona's vets and their families deserve better. And, for that and many other reasons, I've already cast my vote for Obama.

Good ridance Radu perhaps in the meantime you should do your homework and take an economics course as well as a little political science. I agree the past 8 years have not been productive especially in the last two when Mr. Franks mislead the American public on Fanny and Freddie, you should be ashamed of your party's obvious disregard for the average taxpayers loss due to that debackle.

You ludicrously speak as if your precious "Capitalist Ideology" is so Pure and Free of any hint of Socialism that "it" exists in some Vacuum in Space. So explain "Your" President, His Secretary of the Treasury and "Your" Party, "Nationalizing the entire Finanacial Banking & Investment System of the United States, Mr. Socialistic Conservative. Undeniably some desperate, perhaps futile attempt to STOP the destruction wrought, by the Crushing Debt & Failed Capitalistic Notions, "Fiscal Conservatives" like YOU supported & tried for the last 8 years, eh? I thought so, speechless are we? Your little psuedo-intellectual buddy there has some good advice I'll apply, and not waste anymore of my time.

J. Byrd: Let me share some advice my grandfather once gave to me: "Never argue with stupid, their limited intellect forces you to deal with them on their terms where they have the advantage of experience." There is really no point in trying to discuss anything with some people. They don't care what's true, they don't care what's right, and bottom line, they just plain aren't worth the trouble.

Radu you are a real piece of work, a bleeding heart liberal, combat vet, small business owner, parent of a 5 million dollar a year company owner, a hardcore gun owner and someone who owns their home free and clear without any debt. You rant and rave about how you have been mistreated by the past administration, but according to your claims you are extremely well off as a result of these policies. Perhaps you got one of those sweetheart mortgage deals like Chris Dodd which enable you to pay off your debts on the taxpayer dollar as well huh? You post each day about how most of us who disagree with your opinion are losers and scared of what you think will be economic productivity when in fact it has been proven that raising taxes in a recession leads directly to depression. You would rather place your bet on an unproven philosopher without any record of achievement or transparency, who has in fact stated he will take from people who do pay taxes and provide it in wealth redistribution to those who currently pay nothing. This country has been successful because of our capitalist ideology because we can see from the socialistic societies their systems do not even come close to success, resulting in their status of third world nations never changing. The Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Biden and Obama trifecta will destroy the values this nation has been built upon, because there will be no checks and balances on their off the wall spending and radical ideology indoctrination that has already affected intellectually disabled people such as yourself. Please get a clue, most of us can use our common sense to see where this party wishes to lead us into. We value our freedoms and honest values which are severely lacking with you and your chosen party.

Are you guys Redundant or What? Just one of you rocket scientists explain to me in some honest tone, How in an American Society that takes care of everything for you, EVERYTHING with Tax-dollars, Cradle to Grave. Education, Highways, Unemployment, Job Services, local government, food-stamps Social Security Medi-Care, local government Services. How did you grow up without EVER using or being touched by a single Socialist program of the Undited States of America? The foundations of your "Socialist" assertions are ludicrous. • Property Taxes & Info • Law & Justice • Bid Solicitations • Construction & Land Use • Public Health & Medical • Elections & Voting • Permits & Licenses • Resolutions, Ordinances... to name a few "Socialist" Programs & Services provided as America and Arizona has for Oh say, the last 100 years. You expect US to believe that you "Independent" thinkers, Haters of Socialism have made it entirely on your own, never used a Highway, School or any Service provided by Government, anywhere, anytime (paid through the collective taxes of the many), Well aren't you "Special". If America's too Socialist for you, might I suggest Nicaragua or Venezula, Colombia. Your Willful Ignorance in the Public Square should be an embarrassment, and you think, Scare Tactics are gonna Win an Election for your party?

I never realized Right Wing Gun Owners are such a large group of Chickens. Are you all cowering at home, afraid the scary man will come and take your guns away? Do you just have them, but don't know how to use them? I'm as well armed as the 101st Airborne on any given day and I pity the fool that would ever try to forcibly take my guns away. Just because someone's a Liberal Progressive thinker, they aren'y Libertarian also. And don't make the mistake of believing your own Gun propaganda. Taking individual Guns away from people has proven historically to be a very deadly proposition and if you believe some politician's planning that's gonna happen any time soon, I got some Swamp-land in Florida and Lunar lots at bargin prices for ya. You guys always come outta the Wood-work at Election-Time.

jim: If you believe Obama is pro-gun or even just middle of the road on the subject, I have a bridge I want to sell you. And by the way, I did google it. I saw article after article confirming Obama is about as anti-gun as a politician gets and has proposed various handgun bans. Maybe you should actually google things before you suggest others do so when you are well, shall we say stretching the truth. Google "handgun control bill Obama" and read what the guy is all about. He is not a supporter of the 2nd amendment and to add insult to injury he isn't honest about it. I could at least respect someone that would tell the truth about his position, even if I didn't agree.

It is time to let the Hannity, Limbaugh, and Rove politics to fade away. It is time to turn the page. Many of you pro-McCain, gun-totin' folks here use words like "scary" and "afraid". What is WRONG with you people?! Stop living your lives in fear, live them in hope. Do some of you miss Bush "Terrorist risk scale"? Remember, everyday he would tell us how scared we should be. Red= REALLY scared. Green=just kind of scared. No more fear America, we can't afford to be scared anymore. Embrace hope... 08ama!

Sarah Palin is governor of a state where the citizens jointly own the oil and gas. Every year they all share in the proceeds to the tune of $3200. This bounty is shared with all Alaskans, even those who did not contribute to the earnings. Sounds like socialism.

Article comment by: thank you from the heart

Letter of thanks, I really do appreciate the way you vote, it will make my life so much easier at your expense. You see I have been a long time admirer of General Colin Powell, John McCain as well as many other American Patriots. Now that the prestigious General has decided to vote for a rock star without any record of accomplishment, it must be okay to do so. We will not need to worry if the candidate has any experience because Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed will insure they keep him informed of his responsibilities to them and the socialist party of the Governed States of America. Since most of you have decided to follow the rhetoric of the promises of an unaccomplished candidate, I will be able to reduce my hours at work and claim the benefits from the spreading of the wealth from the once fairly well off Americans who worked as hard or even harder than I have, but I deserve a piece of their pie because they don’t need as much as they have. And Mr. Radu since you own your home out right and have retired at 56 perhaps you could put a little of your hard earned cash towards my welfare plan as well, you obviously have more than you need since your kids run a $5 million dollar a year business, lets spread the wealth, I need to retire too at only 46. And for all you young people who want to vote for change, I thank you too for your generosity, because you are deciding to mortgage your futures so I can retire early I think you are to be commended for the suffering you will undoubtedly suffer in the future at my expense. Your socialist leadership will insure your money is being spent very well on my early retirement, so thank you very much. Yes I think this will work out very well indeed I will get one of those government owned apartments live on the government redistributed wealth of all of you young people including Mr. Radu’s children, because they definitely don’t need that 5 million a year in sales so I can have my part to go fishing for the next 25 or 30 years and let you all pay the tab. If there is any consolation, remember this is your decision and your consequence for gambling on an unknown, but that’s okay because General Powell said it is the thing to do.

Who would have thought that Colin Powell was a socialist? The Republican cacophony about a phony tax redistribution plan and socialism is just a pathetic last resort to name calling. The tax code has already redistributed the income to benefit the wealthy. Now it is time to share tax burden with the rest of us who have been subsidizing their welfare, and to no good end. Trickle down theory is forever in the dust bin of history.

Article comment by: Oscar Jennings

Before any of you vote read this editorial by Charlie Reese, a former columnist of the Orlando & Sentinel Newspaper: By Charlie Reese Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits? Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes? You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does. You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does. You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does. You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does. You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does. One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country. I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank. I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes. Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party. What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it. The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to. It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist. If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair. If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red. If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ, it's because they want them in IRAQ . If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way. There are no insoluble government problems. Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like 'the economy,' 'inflation,' or 'politics' that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do. Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible. They, and they alone, have the power. They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees . We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Thanks to our ancestors and the people who have fought for our freedom we have the right to comment. Is that what we all really want for the future?

Article comment by: Patayan: Both sides or only one?

Patayan: A serious question: Is character assassination un-American when the victim of it is John McCain or Sarah Palin? It seems to me that many, many liberals have a real double standard going here. Nobody can say anything negative about Obama, or his policies, without being called a racist or un-American, while I read and hear daily vicious personal attacks on the Republican nominees (and their families, for that matter). I am just curious if you, personally, think it is un-American for both sides, or only one?

Yokelometer: And, tell me, what if someone was running for President that didn't believe in the 1st Amendment? Would you say "hey, the country is circling the drain and all you can think about is your precious free speech or right to worship as you chose?" Somehow I doubt it. So, you pick which rights are important and worth keeping based on your personal/political bias. I can't think of anything less American. And as for referring to your neighbors as "yokels", even if indirectly, well, that's also pretty revealing. Let me guess...some affiliation with Prescott College?

It should make us all wary and scared to know that representatives from the Aljazeera Network (based out of Kenya) were in Prescott 2 weeks ago. They were looking for an election night party to attend, preferably Republican, so they could interview the attendees. Wake up people! Really, Ajazeera from the Middle East. They weren't here 4 years ago and I doubt they would come all this way if the Democrat candidate was Hillary. Wake up people...

The choice in this presidential election is between a candidate who supports the founding principle of equality of opportunity (McCain) and a candidate who supports Karl Marx's principle of equality of result (Obama). The choice is clear for those sufficiently informed to understand the difference.
