Courtesy photos Prescott architect Matthew Ackerman designed this east Texas home, which will be featured on "Amazing Vacation Homes: Inspired by Nature" on the Travel Channel. Ackerman submitted photos of the great room.
"It wound up in the 'Inspired by Nature' episode because of its shape, location and proximity to a river," Langlie stated in an e-mail. "The primary reason was the undulating roof, and it also used to be a camping property so it reflected the owners' love of nature." The Travel Channel is scheduled to air the segment of "Amazing Vacation Homes: Inspired by Nature" will air at 7 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m. Tuesday and 2 p.m. Jan. 23 (all local times), Ackerman said. Cable One does not carry the channel, but it is available via satellite. Ackerman, with Catalyst Architecture LLC, said the Lily Pad House is inspired by its location and is nestled in the trees surrounding Lake Horseshoe Bend. Built from Western red cedar, the home is a 12-sided structure with 360-degree views of the lake and environs. The one-bedroom home covers only 1,100 square feet, but the property also comes with an artist's studio that has room for sleeping two people, Ackerman said. "The house is a unique design," Ackerman said. "It is kind of deceptive from the outside. It hides itself from the landscape so well that you don't see that it is there. The native landscape was left right up to the house." Ackerman said he designed the home in 1993 for its future owners – Lynn Sherman and David Hummel – while he was living in San Francisco. He added that he also worked with the contractor on the construction of the house, completing it in 1994. Ackerman's firm specializes in custom residential, commercial, public and nonprofit work. He has been an architect in Prescott since 1997, and earned accreditation from the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
