Ty Mier made three 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 11 points and the Chino Valley boys basketball team won its home opener versus Mohave Valley River Valley on Friday, 43-41.

Cougars coach Clint Cross said while his team struggled with putting four quarters of solid play together in several of its most recent games, that wasn't the case Friday.

"The past three or four games there were stretches where we looked so tense. And then we'd make bad decisions, or turn the ball over," he said. "Tonight we played (strong) for 32 minutes.

"That's what I've been looking for."

The Cougars (4-4 overall, 1-1 Class 3A West Region) trailed 21-18 at the half, but came alive in the third to take control.

The hosts got big 3-pointers from Mier, Kai Bighorse and Jeremy Robbins and went on to outscore the Dust Devils 17-10 in the quarter.

"We got a lot of good looks in the first half, but we couldn't knock them down," Cross said. "We got the same shots in the second half, but we were able to (make) them."

Bighorse and Robbins had eight points apiece, while Teller Bard worked the low post for six points.

The Cougars will host Phoenix Bourgade Catholic on Monday. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
